IPTV Dead

Sitting in a bar with my buddies, hearing IPTV is dead in the water. Too complicated and too costly. I think it was too late, if you ask me. Hope Lowell has a Plan Z. Oh wait, Marni may decide to go buy Disney now.

"5g low bandwidth is coming sooner than you think, and that will be the end to the wireline..." - @2mni

The 5G buildout is going to be very infrastructure intensive, requiring massive deployment of small cells as millimeter waves cannot travel well through buildings and other obstacles & get absorbed by plants and rain. Realistically, these numerous antennas will need to be wired to (fibered to), upgraded, and maintained.

Keep in mind VZW passed on the iPhone when it was first released because the arrogant leadership thought it was too expensive. Passing on what has become most iconic communication device ever developed. Just one example of the lack of vision of the senior "leadership". Around the same time, VZW leadership became obsessed with dirty carpets and floors in wireline buildings with execs doing personal inspections. The obsession ended when they found out the cost of cleaning those carpets and floors. Not only are their priorities screwed up, but they have no clue as to the products and services wanted by customers. Especially millennial customers.

IPTV was originally supposed to launch in 2016. It got delayed by short-sighted decisions on the marketing and technology sides. It came down to a lack of interest and focus right at the top, with Marni who was not up to managing Guru, Angiolet, and Irwin. None of them were on the same page and a lot of it had to do with varying poor understanding of the tech, the market, and strategy.

These people were all paid a lot and didn't keep their eyes on the ball. So now we have Go90 and new Wireline leadership who have more ego than experience in the area. No wonder it's years late and likely to be shelved.

I have three teenagers. They just do not want to watch TV. Period. We have 400 channels, unless it's sports they will not watch it.

They have zero tolerance for TV commercials - that's one of the reasons... The reasoning is: why are they interrupting this show with this loud and irrelevant junk (cue in a floor polisher commercial)... I guess once you try Netflix, 10 uninterrupted episodes of whatever-you-like it's hard to go back to that 30-min-of-program-30-min-of-ads schema...

The only thing that they may watch is sports, big events but even when they do that I see only very limited excitement on their faces. It's just a matter of time when Amazon and Netflix will start bidding for TV rights for sports, once that happens TV, IPTV or not, will be officially dead...

I'm gonna state that IPTV is a great product and even far superior to optimum s tv service. It works extremely well. But i will agreebits a highly competitive market now with OTT providers . Only time will tell . And it's because cable companies have an antiquated system that 4k is so limited. Iptv can handle 4k . But cable systems cannot.

Problem in this company is lack of innovation. Too many "cannot do" versus "we can do". IPTV is a great product and just like any other product, it takes development and innovative thought processes. Google, Samsung, and Apple are examples of going against the "cannot do". Wish some of you folks who can see outside the box would just leave or allow for change. We as a company cannot remain as a ma'bell or a wireless company. If the company does not prepare for the future, many of us will be without jobs. Look at how Frontier is struggling, they want to remain in the ma'bell environment, never doing anything outside the box. Their thought process is "stick with what you know". Wrong way of being successful. If IPTV doesn't function correctly then maybe we should all look at solutions. And no I do not drink the kool-aide. Just gets tiring to read so much negativity on these boards. Things change, if you got laid off, hopefully you thought of the potential and prepared for it. I'm sure Samsung faced the same issues we are seeing and look how well they are doing. Even Google with Google Fiber struggled with it and even stopped their implementation in expansion. However the biggest proof is Tesla, unknown territory and now they have developed affordable solar tile roofs which will be cheaper than traditional roofs. Who knew!

Relax.

If we can have a couple of fellas walking, riding a dune buggy, and golfing on the moon in a mere eight years after announcing that ambition, I'm quite positive we can have IPTV as well if we put our minds to it. It might even be available on the moon, though subscription demand for such a service would likely be lacking at first.

Have a little faith. There's way too many "CAN'T BE DONE" naysayers out there. Put enough money, minds and resources at a difficulty, and the problems will eventually disappear.

@OXtY4Xt-nst Exactly! That half a billion dollar purchase from Intel for the OnCue platform was supposed to be for IPTV. Marni needs to be fired!
