Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Its official, my whole team is LRed.

Hey Guys

After 16 years of below average career in Cisco, today VP informed in meeting that whole team is getting LR ed. Worked mostly in Telecom domain for all these years, I am out of Job staring at Mortgage, Kids and myself in mirror.

I did all kind of jobs Cisco gave me with out focusing on expertise. I gave couple of interviews with only Bachelor degree from a Foreign country and legacy Telecom domain no one is hiring me. No one to blame except myself, should have screwed cisco and thought about myself.

Guys what should I be doing now? throw in towel and migrate to 3rd world country? or is there still hope for me in bay area? Please enlighten me.

Sorry; looks like Roland needed more funding for his Spark board enhancements.

Next version will have a mini-drone to deliver the board marker and dry-eraser to the next presenter.

PS: Try to have a sense of humor through all this. I have walked same path of getting kicked out the club. Your life is not over, it's just starting. Believe in yourself; you'll make it.

I got hit last year, I was devastated... but then i was lucky enough to start a new job only 2 weeks after my last day at Cisco. It is similar salary but without bonus. However, no night calls with Asia, no early morning call with East coast or Europe, no weekend work, it is really 8hrs (or less per day), stress free... I really got my family life back. So I hope you stay strong and will be fine.

Wish you all the best, don't depress yourself of thinking it's your fault! it's not! Just start acquiring new skills and definitely you'll land at good position. it's just a matter of time.

The market is hot in the Bay Area... That's a plus... The easy way is to go with headhunters, they will find you a bunch of things but many will s--- work wise - the pay will be average... You can build/scrape a small list email addresses of companies you are interested in - automate emails, send a 100 you will get 2 or 3 interviews - i've done this many times, it always works this way (literally i'd say - need a job, an engineer, contact me if you think my skills match whatever is open in your company)...

Network, talk to people... Ping every single person on your linkedin profile with a note that you are available and that you'd be happy to interview if they have openings. Do the same thing on Facebook, if you have folks who are in the same industry...

Do the traditional route as well, but that's hard - looking at websites, submitting profiles, etc. Takes forever, and it's a long shot as 100 other folks is doing the same thing at the same time.

Dont worry about your non-US degree, after all that time at Cisco your work is all what matters -

I've hired over 50 people in my career, it's a non issue for for folks with 10+ years of experience...

Check out Upwork.com, just for a reference, see if folks are looking for super short gigs in your domain, you'll be surprised how much work is out there in random areas - that's just temporary to keep you busy, it's likely you will not be able to find a long term thing there...

Also, check out this post https://www.thelayoff.com/t/IOkx9rN or @IOkx9rN - someone posted it a year ago here...

Godspeed!

I'm sorry to hear about your LR but the other guy is correct. You will land on your feet and you will find that you enjoy you new job more than you did working at Cisco. Cisco cut me two years ago and I have enjoy my job since. No walking around every day, week, month or year waiting for the LR.

I was in a similar situation two years ago. Whole team got whacked. Don't blame yourself. If the whole team got hit the reason was probably bad decisions made by someone with a much higher pay grade than yourself. I was in cloud orchestration. One would think that would be a safe location.

No one gets a job after 2 interviews. Your new job is finding a job. Keep your chin up. Everyone goes through what happened to you at least once or twice in their careers. Take online classes to build skills and network, network, network. Good luck. The job market is good. You will land on your feet and be glad, like I am, that Cisco kicked me out the door.
