Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

My Layoff Mantra

If you want to get ready for layoffs:

  • Clean up your life, now, in every sense

  • Do the basics. Update Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, if you are not on it, get on it

  • Get a project, any project, keep busy, work on anything

  • Network your a-- off, online/offline, call, ping, mail

  • Fish where the money is, check out crowdfunding sites, you’ll see who is hiring - this is easy

  • Create a storm system that s---s you along – blog, write, post, be active

  • Make it easy to do business with, be available, be out there

  • Spend some money to make money, invest in yourself and the search - think: swag

  • Start a blog about job opportunities in the industry you want to be in, keep up, post, post, it'll pay off

  • Say no to everyone and everything that won't help you get a job, focus, focus, focus

The point of the OP is to get connected and stay connected. Can we all please remember that we are playing on the same team and not insult each other's culture?

What is done international versus the US is good and the culture differences are to be expected. The point is to use whatever networking norms that are available in your country or the country you want to work in.

In the US it is normal not to use FB for networking unless you own your own business, sales, or real estate. Those who do usually have a public FB page for business and a private personal page for friends and family. As others said, LinkedIn is a good site and recruiters refer to it but there are also places like Opportunity, Meet Up, and professional groups to get connected in.

The new snapping chat and phooto aps have good tools for networking and job looking. It best if you know how to work with APIs to make work optimally. If you to old or not very technical, stay to linkin, Facebook or monster job site.

LinkedIn should do the job connecting your network world-wide. It's more professional. Facebook is for boring wives and gossipers.

how does not-having-a-social-media account make you live in-a-bubble? It's the dumbest statement I've seen. Use it at your own risks. It's not my cup of tea. It's for narcissists. There are other ways to network and socialize. Facebook is not one of them.

@1ebq @1wnk - FB and Twitter are both good if used appropriately. Don't put cat videos on it, if you get wasted, do not post a selfie, it's simple. As long as it's professional, it's OK.

The OP was sending an important message, keep being active, keep engaging folks and be out there. It's important. You cannot live in a bubble, you need to be out there, it's 2016...

@1wnk

Your US view of Facebook shows that you don't know how to network with people outside of the US. Facebook is frequently used as a professional networking tool in Europe.

LinkedIn is good, but who the fukc would use facebook or twitter. I myself have rejected many candidates by stalking their facebook and twitter accounts. Those sh*ts are toxic. Get rid of them.

At the end of the day, we have to know our dharma so we can thrive in this environment. Your comments are happy. If anyone needs help with blog or setting up news feed, I have friends in India who code and are cheap so you don't have to spend all of the money.
