Over the years compensation has decreased greatly, now a days is not quite the same, I worked for AT&T for 10 years and made 90K plus benefits, now people get a much lower base pay around 60K and really bad benefits compared to 2015, Of course I do not believe AT&T want the best people to stay, with all this constant layoff / merger, and re-org drama.
This company don’t and can't differentiate between a coder/programmer, Developer or an Engineer for at matter, and they are so worried about they stock porfolio that forgot how to be create within, that is be the reason why they outsource complete units, off shored DevOps, and call centers.
While in Dallas AT&T says it has a contingency workforce ready to replace you, I feel for many of my friends that remained in this toxic culture and stagnant technology , that may be what is holding them back...
