Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Question for former ATt/Directv Employee

A question for former ATT/ Directv Employees ( call centers that have closed down). Besides management layoffs what are some of the other things that happen before a call center may close down? Oh and can a unionized call center close down?

You know that does make sense now that you say that, I think they are going to close the call center who takes the most Etime. Our call center in Huntsville is basically like a ghost town.

I think you are on to something with maybe they are testing us. Maybe testing to see which center can handle the calls the best. One of us must be closing down :( America is hanging in the balance and I am afraid we may all lose. 39

It's been a rumor at the Huntington call center for a while that we are going to close.... We have been told we have horrible attendance. Also we have been told that we are in the red... This is funny to me because up until recently we were always being told we were one of the too sites. Our attendance has always been horrible from fmla abusers but that seems to be common other places as well. Anyway, over the last 2 months or so it's been etime everyday. So what's up??? Are the calls being routed off shore and they are just testing to see if they still need us or is it for sure coming???

I work at a large call center in the south east area and rumor has it we will close by mid 2018. I have been working there for 9 years and can attest that changes have been happening. The morale is low and absences are high with a lot of fmla abuse. I am very concerned that the rumors are true but, I am not sure if I should look for another job. I don't want to lose my seniority but, I don't want to be without a job either. Right the center is extremely busy with back to back calls however, it was like this before then suddenly the calls stopped. I wish we knew if the rumors are true. I hate wondering every friday when I return to work on Monday if I will still have a job.

When you're Area Manager leaves or retires with no replacement, and your center is being overseen by someone across the country, you might be concerned. If vacancies in staffing are not being filled, and management keeps talking around your questions, you might want to prepare to leave.

I'm in a union call center and have been a service rep for att started out with Ameritech then sbc now att, anyhow I was in a center that closed, we knew years before hand it was our centers destiny we had horrible attendance Fmla abusers and declining production. If you ask most centers that have closed they will tell you they knew it was coming b4 hand, we were threatened many times b4 we closed it would happen if reps didn't come to work, now if your union it's less likely to happen bec they will appeal and fight to keep it going, we as reps thanks to uinion have job guarantee

Language so we simply relocated offices to the next closer call center which was only 12 miles away, sadly this center is doing even worse in the attendance field and it appears we will most likely be closing sometime I'm sure soon.

There doesn’t have to be any things happening before a center closes. Management layoffs are not indicative of centers closing. AT&T left hand doesn’t know what it’s right hand is doing.

Oh and can a unionized call center close down?

Absolutely. There’s nothing in the contract that says they have to keep a call center open. Much more affordable to slowly close and move to Mumbai.

I would like to know this as well... It's very frustrating working in a center where you keep hearing rumors that it is shutting down and just the uncertanty. I know at our center they even showed a power point about transferring to other centers ... What's up with that?
