Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Wireline and Fios badly mismanaged

Now that the QAR has been cancelled, Verizon has found a new way to harass technicians. They know the union cannot object to safety, so the company uses "safety" as the cover for surprise inspections. The true function of the "safety blitz" is stealth harassment

Technicians are threatened of dire consequences should they be caught not carrying tools they do not need for the job at hand. Of course it makes sense for technicians who drive a van to have as much gear as possible stored in the van, but for technicians who do not drive a company vehicle this policy makes no sense.

Example..technicians doing installation and repair work for a single customer must carry at every moment gloves that are exclusively used for pulling cable in large scale construction or cable maintenance work. It is impossible to do 99% of installation or repair work while wearing these gloves; you can't separate wires, turn screws, or do any task that requires fine motor coordination with these on. Yet they must be carried. Technicians who never work on telephone poles must carry a little yellow card with them at all times that details forbidden techniques for working on telephone poles. And so on..

At the same time, many tools and supplies that really are needed by the technician on a daily basis are not available and must be borrowed, shared or stolen from other technicians or they must be delivered to the job site wasting hours of time.

If Verizon cares so much about safety, why was no RF frequency safety training provided until 2016? Why are technicians not advised to slow down or provided with cooling techniques during severe heat advisories? RF exposure at cell sites is often above FCC limits and can cause cancer. Heatstroke can be fatal, unlike not having a pair of gloves or a yellow card.

I am all for safety, but it seems the true purpose of these surprise visits is to create an atmosphere of fear and high stress at all times in the work environment. But is stress healthy or safe? Is it safe to have technicians working insane hours of mandatory overtime, and then operating company vehicles on the streets? Not to mention driving home? Apparently that is a type of safety Verizon does not care about.

Finally why are technicians encouraged to rush through mandatory safety training so as not to reduce production?

Clearly Verizon cares more about production than safety. This is strange because if you consider it, we are a service company not an assembly line. We may only ever do one installation for a customer, but the work we do that day will create a lasting impression. Why can't we take the time to do a good job? Why do we want our technicians to be stressed out and tired 24/7? Does anyone do their best work in that state? Does anyone make the best impression on a customer in that state?

Considering these actions by the company, the focus on numbers to the detriment of quality, the focus on creating an atmosphere of fear, the false "concern" with safety, combined with the public pronouncements of our leadership, one can only conclude that the company no longer has an interest in providing good wireline service (including Fios) and is more interested in cutting costs, tormenting employees until they quit, and transforming the company into some other business. What exactly Verizon wants to become is unclear based on the constant mixed messages, but one thing is certainly clear...wireline including Fios needs to be managed by another company.

THe co has been doing that forever. If you piss off a supv, you either get suspended for low numbers or safety violations. You can't do both

The heart of the company lies in the wired network whether the trolls and executives want to admit it or not. It consistently makes money and isn't a fad service like wireless is. If FiOS was ever built out right like Ivan wanted Verizon would be an unstoppable powerhouse. Right now there's so much money left on the table with COs having FiOS equipment but no outside fiber laid in to sell the service.

@1wwt

DEAD ON.

management is pretty much there to ask techs if they want to work their NS days, force people for one more job at quitting time, and hand out welcome back letters after an absence. The tablets that we have now pretty much make managers expendable and an unnecessary cost. I hear some garages don't even have a boss anymore, the guys know what is expected of them, and they do it.

1fnf- there are union workers who actually split one job and there are union guys who should be running the place. He called out management people too and I agree with him. Its too bad that the groups don't get to interact more. We should be angry with the devils at the top not eachother.

@1axw's cowardly insults and simpleminded philosophy say more about him than any union worker. He obviously has no idea what is going on in wireline, or the company in general. He must be so desperate for attention, so I think we should all ignore him. He is probably looking for some rough trade from the Village People construction worker.

There are way too many managers now, most are completely useless and do nothing. Why in the World would they hire more and have them trained by no nothing managers that do not know the job themselves? It makes no sense. By the way, all the training is on discipline, go figure, but then again that's all they know, so that's all they teach.

You are not a tech and job security is not threatened by knowledge cause in Union is seniority. Shows how much you know about the job or issues. Zilch

@Nl1UEfZ-1axw "refused to take your role to the next level or share your knowledge with others" Sorry I was too busy being suspended by the talented skilled managers for not having my 188 hanging off my belt INSIDE a customers house! FACT!

That's one "role" I don't need or want....This place is literally infested with $cumbag leeches that shouldn't have a job managing a car wash let alone a fortune 500 company. Fire them start over and save Verizon. They do nothing all day long anyway while we are seeing the customer and doing the job they sit back in the garage master bating and wait for us to come back with the money, then they have the nerve to tell us we are not working fast and hard enough for them! Go F-- yourself!

I'm tired of supporting these do-nothing managers.

Instead of hiring these "managers" that have zero clues. What a complete waste of money! I have my tablet. keep it working and I don't need a manager. Oh and how about supplying the tech's that actually see the customer and do the actual job with the proper tools. Since I am the one that is going to Home Depot to purchase these tools myself and then be reimbursed anyway I really don't need a "manager"

the union workers did this to themselves. too concerned with squeezing a few more gibsmedats (which most dont deserve) instead using these so called skills to make the organization stronger as a whole. how many of you refused to take your role to the next level or share your knowledge with others because that would threaten your "job security". this is long overdue. way too many union piggies eating off the backs of the talented few. what kind of man lives like that?

Customer reps and techs need a new strategy. The truth is that "management" will do anything to preserve themselves no matter how ridiculous it is. Not saying this is an easy thing to do but somehow you guys need to be like alternative media and push back, especially those who deal with customers and bear the burden of their stupidity. You all make it easy for management to be slobs when there isn't any resistance from other parts of the business. Theres no leadership, just a bunch of overpaid shells Looking to make friends and avoid competition at all costs.

No trollonger on this thread yet. Good because it's a sad reality and I didn't want to read nonsense, and all the posts on here are serious, true reality of what we are into working for vz in 2017. Our garage is a cemetery now and it just feels like the end every day we come to work. Techs retiring are not replaced. Tools must be purchased by techs directly. The union is unavailable for reaching out to, because they, too, are gone. It's a sad state of affairs and feels just like walking around dead malls that were once vibrant.

The problem with management on the wireline side today is the managers do not know the job at all. It used to be that your boss worked your position at one time in his/her career and knew the job. The people they are hiring today are straight off the street that managed a Burger King at one time. Now these no nothings are going to tell a tech...which by the way has a least 20 years on the job....how they want it done.

Good luck customer.

Verizon views every single employee as an expense and they made the decision a decade ago to cut their expenses via technology. They have a seemingly unlimited technology budget, hand tools along with the minds and hands to physically do the work are not needed.

A splicer working alone. Requests for a helper are not granted. Any trouble in manhole is to be dropped. Keep picking up jobs until you find a aerial trouble you can fix.

Fdr be on a job for 4 hours or less

Make sure you fix it the first time

I do pr changes in ug because i have no helper to go in manhole

Than next time it rains customer is out of service again
