Before it started raining.

Hearing rumors about rif's coming sometime later this year, so October wouldn't surprise me. On the network side in wireless, am hearing contractors will be replacing much of net. ops. Wouldn't doubt it.

The 401k and education are great few companies in the private sector can match. The medical is good not excellent but still better than probably 70% of the plans out there.

For some employees like engineering and technology better options are out there but for csr or call center I would wager vz is offering some best in class benefits that are tough to match. I worked as a part time csr through college before moving into IT when I graduated so I've been here a while.....

I agree Verizon has good benefits. Seems like low hanging fruit they could easily cut since they are flat broke.

Add should also have added:

d) severance. Really expect this to be cut but been expecting that for years!

For some, there are doubtless better opportunities out there, and getting out of a toxic environment is worth a lot. But when comparing, there are a few places where VZs benefits are very good and should be considered as part of the total rewards.

a) 401(K) 100% match up to 6%, + up to 3% discretionary. Many places have no match, or a 50% match only, and sometimes just in company stock (GTE used to be like that 20 years ago)

b) Medical benefits: Plans are pretty good and fairly cheap compared to many (although some companies pay 100% for individual plans, but generally with higher copays and deductibles)

c) Training/Education Verizon's plan is very generous.

No positions are safe, that is a fact. Keep your resume up to date. As I interview for new jobs I'm suprised how many other better opportunities exists outside of Verizon. Do yourself a favor and at least explore other opportunities, I think you will be pleasantly suprised.
