here is what I don't understand, where am I going wrong?
Verizon has wireline and wireless. As we all know, for the past several years wireline (includes Fios) still exists because of public obligations and because there is no real substitute for the needs of big business, but it has been neglected, put on the back burner, left to rot, etc. all in favor of wireless.
The investment has all been in wireless, thus we buy out vodaphone.
However, now profits in wireless are declining. We are told 5G will revolutionize everything, but that day has not yet arrived.
Meanwhile, we are attempting to enter the OTT field and compete with established names like Amazon and Netflix
Here is where things get confusing. First of all, if 5G will revolutionize the world as is claimed, why is there any need to get into the OTT business? Why not put all that investment into wireless? If Verizon actually succeeds in the OTT business, won't that attract Government attention around issues like monopoly and net nuetrality?
Secondly why are we even trying to compete with these companies that require a pipe for their very existence? Without Verizon and the cable companies where would Netflix be today? They need us. the only conclusion seems to be that there is some doubt as to how profitable/transformative 5G will actually be. (and when that day will actually arrive).
This all leads to question three. Currently the fastest possible internet speeds are still on landline. Why not invest in keeping our advantage as the fastest provider of home broadband? Yes POTS telephone lines are vanishing, yes people are cutting the cord on cable boxes, but there is still a great demand, an increasing demand for high speed internet to the home. The faster the better as many people now work from home, in addition to getting their movies and gaming online.
Is it good enough to prematurely force a wireless transition that will provide a speed that is merely adequate to today's needs? If we provide a faster connection than people currently need, this will allow for innovation and for new services. Services will require the fastest available ISP.
Are we neglecting this entire side of our business, and chasing showbiz moonbeams just because our current CEO favors wireless and hates the Union?
Vz stream or whatever typical dumb name it gets will be overpriced in a waaaay too crowded field of ott providers.
Vz should HAVE stuck with being a dumb pipe and quality wireless provider. No, always gotta try to please wall st with massive growth.

(That's why we worked so hard to get a franchise to sell cable TV, it was all part of our plan. We knew all along people were gonna cut the cord but we just faked like we didn't.)
