Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

CWA-CA union inaction

Throughout the AT&T system, workers are waiting for a domino effect to occur. How many long-time workers will retire now that the company and its unions continue approving deals to increase the number of new employees which are now NOT eligible for pension plan? How much movement will that create for workers in positions that are declared "surplus?" Will opportunities be available in AT&T facilities nearby, or will employees have to move long distances to remain with AT&T in jobs that, because they are unionized, pay wages that are hard to find these days?

No doubt, There's so much ambiguity, people are very nervous and our human resources departments had become a cesspool of corruption in the corporate body

Leaders of the Communication Workers of America and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, which represent AT&T workers, are more than nervous. They're mad, they are disappointed that a healthy, profitable AT&T does not (any longer) equate to employment security.

The continuos stories of being laid off and taking jobs at other AT&T facilities, come and go, every quarter we are subject to surplus declarations, to only to find ourselves in the cold when downsizing hit our facilities.

many AT&T communications technicians in CA, , were notified two weeks ago that their jobs were being consolidated into a Denver office, a testament to technological advancements that are allowing AT&T to cut labor costs, while the CWA strike was quickly ended by " the same CWA cesspool of corruption".... pretty silly union we have

They give preferable treatment to senior members, someone or something one likes or favours more than others, For new members 10+ years is like buying an insurance product with high ideductibles sooooooo high that could never be used, consider this charity

Union wages are minimums, the company can pay you as much as it wants over that amount. How often does the company pay more?

Did someone not get the memo about union priorities? Unions exist to protect the most senior members, not the best workers. Unions are basically Marxist/Communist in their actions. They take money from the high producing workers and redistribute it to the most senior workers. If I had been union, I would have so much less money now because all of the merit raises and performance awards I've EARNED would have been taken from me redistributed among my coworkers. That's why they keep talking about unity. They don't want you to earn more than anyone else just like they don't want to lose out on those dues.

Pension hasn't been provided for years since the telecom industry lobbied to get out of of ERISA laws. Anyone hired after 2001, (or around that time) do not get a pension.
