Why do we employ sales managers who can't even text or know how to use apps? Crazy you say? NO! I've seen Director level sales managers who are texting with one finger - God Forbid that they miss their mani/pedi appointment each week.

Our managers now have never worked in the field it's a joke! Some of the worst managers I've ever had in 20 years! Lol they come out in the field in hi heels or dress shoes it's pathetic ....
@vkc.....agree with your entire post. Also feel that the most effective managers not just only manage people well, but can understand for the most part the job at hand for the people they are managing.
The celebrity thing is really odd. Maybe it's a part of transforming to an entertainment company, but we've always had some of the best commercials with nobodys. Lily, the guy sitting at the table with kids, office taco party.
Like was said, I wonder how many jobs that actually make a difference in sales and the customer experience could have been saved.
What I hate is as a manager is when employees constantly call in cuz they're still drunk from night before, or they abuse fmla to go out partying, not all great sales people make good managers and not all managers are great sales people, but whatever job you're in: you should know how to do it and do it well. Enough excuses from 20 year olds that "my nose is running I need to go see mommy". I did both jobs and excelled at both. I'm not old so don't start with the dinosaur crap, I'm just saying the younger kids the company is hiring are a joke, no work ethic, and if you hate your job QUIT! I know there's not much of a future with this company, after all we do have to pay Taylor swift, mark wahlberg etc., what a joke that is, how many jobs could those deals have saved?

But it would help if he or she did. Having experience working in different departments or titles gives someone a unique understanding of the challenges needing to be overcome. If someone is managing me I expect that person to have worked in my position and luckily my current boss has .. and guess what .. he's one of the best bosses I've had to date with the company.
It's about business. Managing people, doesn't matter what department or industry for that matter. Managers are paid to manage people. They use the information compiled to address issues that impact the bottom line. CEOs of trucking companies don't know how to drive a semi, the head of automotive manufacturers don't know how to work the assembly line. It's your job to know about texting and apps.
I'm a Manager but not in the sales channel. I was promoted from craft in to a position that I have experience in. Most of my peers don't have my background and aren't as effective in their jobs. If the company focused more on promoting from within an organization rather than off the street or from another organization you'd have a much better experience as an employee because your Manager could work with you to tackle roadblocks. I don't have experience in the sales world so I wouldn't apply to be a manager.
Couldn't agree more - have a director in the Entertainment Group that is in her 60's and doesn't have a clue!
