Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

Is Enbridge worth working for?

Is this company worth working for if layoffs are on a regular basis for the sake of the "stakeholders"? My friends were considering to apply some jobs at Enbridge and I could not really sugar coat the reality.

Is Enbridge 'worth it' to work for? Several years ago I would say Yes Absolutely and be a loyal supporter. The desirability to work there has declined dramatically in last 2 years. Today, I'd observe that any Enbridge employment "opportunity" (be it FTE or contract) as being RISKY. Hell, in the October 2016 purge, that was getting rid of FTE's. You can bet that Contractors and a bunch more FTE's in Enbridge and Spectra are likely to depart in the Spring 2017 purge!

The magnitude of the company transformation is going to continue to spin off people and functions that are 'no longer required'. Example: IT and the headlong rush to not one but TWO outsourcing partners. Oh, and If you are not in Calgary AND one of the Chosen Ones, then your views, opinions, expertise and experience don't matter, period. Choose wisely, and start sewing that parachute. You are going to need it. Only 23 more sleeps until the end of March.... wanna play Layoff Day Bingo anyone?

How come Enbridge is still advertising that they are hiring on www.jobinga.ca/jobs but laying off staff?

For everyone of y'all threatening to "leave" there is a hundred dumb people with no skills and experience are willing to take your place who will gladly except your great salary and benefits and the opportunity to reduce enbridge intoNorth America's poorest energy Infrastructure company. Don't worry very soon it follows steps of MEP.

At the end of the day, that's the ugly truth. You do not owe Enbridge anything and Enbridge does not owe you anything except the check that you get when you come to work. Being bitter about it will not change your job security. Enbridge is not forcing you to stay and work for them, so if at any point you've had enough, go find a job at another company.

Capitalism rules ... maybe we should be grateful that we have not been replaced by robots and become homeless eventually.

Enbridge doesn't owe us anything....so do we owe Enbridge anything?

You can see how this attitude would spiral out of control into a destruction of employee morale, attitude, and effort.

Sorry, you can see how this attitude HAS****

This HR troll is a great encapsulation of everything that is wrong with this company. "Stop telling us we treat you like sh--, because we don't owe you anything and you should be greatful to not be homeless."

I see regularly that Enbridge pays well. This always makes me scratch my head. Enbridge, by rule, pays "average." They spend lots of money every year to figure out what average market pay is, and try to hit it as close as they can. They don't even make a secret of it. Why do people keep chirping that they pay well?

I guess compared to similar jobs in other industries?

Enbridge pays well, benefits for FTE's are good and experience working here looks great on a resume. However there is a but (isn't there always) - expect long work hours and poor life balance as the company is adopting the "Do more with less" motto. Also expect poor job security (over the last couple of years) and a company that is highly politicized - pick your battles cautiously and don't rock the boat too heavily or you will be stamped out.

So it really depends on the employee. Experience is good, there are still some good people around that actually care about the job, morale is super low but money is good if you don't care about having a life outside of Enbridge.

Cool. I'll remember that nobody owes me anything...and that I don't owe Enbridge anything.

4 years ago, layoffs were unheard of. 3 years ago, the reality of a downturn in the market and political/environmental opposition to anything related to hydrocarbons made it near impossible to make a profit, which is needed for a sustainable company, and maintain the current employment level. Nobody WANTS to be laid off and everyone believes they DESERVE their job, but fact of the matter is, it's the nature of business. Instead of running down a good company that has, does and will provide all of its FTE's a good wage, good benefits and plenty of personal time off, be thankful for your past or present opportunities and always have a plan B. Nobody owes you anything and the only people who truly care about your well beIng are close friends and family.

If you're unemployed? Sure. It's worth a few months as a contractor until something else comes up.

Have a better option (and most are better options)? Take it. Nowhere to go but down at this place.
