Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

It is official, Direct Now it is a BUST.. Keep spending randy boy!!!

Telco spent $41 million related to Time Warner merger in first quarter

DirecTV’s U.S. customer base remained unchanged in the first quarter of 2017, while AT&T’s U-verse TV service continued to shrink — dropping 233,000 subs in the period.

DirecTV had 21.012 million domestic subs as of the end of March, flat sequentially, compared with 328,000 net adds in the year-earlier period. U-verse TV stood at 4.02 million subscribers, down 23% year over year. According to AT&T, the growth of the DirecTV Now over-the-top pay TV package, launched last fall, helped to offset the declines on the traditional pay-TV side (but it didn’t disclose how many DirecTV Now customers it gained in Q1).

AT&T CFO John Stephens, on a call Tuesday with analysts, cited competition from cable rivals and other OTT services for the ongoing pay-TV slide and said DirecTV was particularly hurt in areas where AT&T doesn’t offer broadband. He said the telco is taking steps to address the segment including looking to increasingly bundle satellite TV with wireless, and added that it will be “more aggressive” in marketing DirecTV Now in the second half of 2017.

The DirecTV Now OTT product is cannibalizing DirecTV’s satellite business to some extent, “but it’s fairly nominal,” CEO Randall Stephenson said on the call.

AT&T also disclosed that it spent $41 million on costs related to its pending $85 billion acquisition of Time Warner, which has yet to receive approval from the U.S. Department of Justice. During Q4, AT&T said it spent $47 million related to the Time Warner deal. Stephenson told analysts AT&T continues to expect the Time Warner deal to close by the end of 2017, citing progress including the European Union’s recent OK of the deal.

Overall revenue for the first quarter totaled $39.37 billion, short of analyst estimates of $40.57 billion, with the telco blaming record-low equipment sales in wireless. The company posted earnings per share of 74 cents, in line with Wall Street forecasts.

In the critical wireless segment, AT&T lost 191,000 postpaid phone subscribers, compared with analysts projections of a drop of 245,000, as competition in the quarter ratcheted up with service providers fighting for share with new unlimited-data plans. It was the first time AT&T has lost wireless customers. Stephens called out AT&T’s bundling of HBO for no extra cost with the Unlimited Plus wireless plan as helping cut subscriber churn.

@MY1BCGw-3tjh There is a bigger picture at play here right now. Former AT&T CEO C. Michael Armstrong said at his retirement party in 2002 " whoever builds the Fiber network will win"

Verizon has just signed another Billion dollar deal with Corning Fiber for 12 million more miles of fiber optical cable. They have virtually rewired their entire network from copper to fiber and now control the country's major cities in the Prime Time Northeast. New York Boston Philadelphia and Washington.

The Fiber network they are building will literally control those cities as customers, not just it's residents but the actual cities. for example the lighting the traffic signals their entire infrastructure will be on a Verizon Fiber network. This is happening.

They will also run their 5G network off the fiber cable that they have passing every structure in those major cities. They own the poles, conduits, manholes, pathways, and central offices now all with fiber, not copper.

Like I said there is a much bigger picture here.....What is AT&T future plane and will they be paying Verizon to run it on Verizon network?

Verizon is in worse shape! Look at their board. T has problems, but at least they'll have content with TW. VZ maxed the credit card buying the part of their Wireless that they didn't own, and then went off buying relics of the 90s like AOL and Yahoo while producing crap products like Go90. Both companies might be in a race to see who can layoff more people, but at least T can survive.

@MY1BCGw-1uem Not sure AT&T is in a better position currently and for the future than VZ.....Sprint T-Mobile yes but not VZ

Verizon has built a fiber network in the North East cities that will be the backbone of a 5G network. They then will essentially own New York-Washington-Boston and Philly. That's a Jugger knot of cities they already control with fiber now.

Agreed, AT&T success all the way to the top, no doubt, but with only 1/3rd of The current employee count, .......abandon ship while you , and can get your 6 months severance

Randy, your simplistic statements are weak and you getting a huge bonus does not equate to the company doing well.

  1. Is AT&T in a better position currently and for the future than VZ, Sprint T-Mobile? YES

  2. Is AT&T CEO Randall more visible, engaged and knowledgeable in industry trends and making investments in employee development and Industry growth opportunities? YES

  3. Is every business or company going through disruption, downsizing, and transformation? YES

Bottom line in comparison to other companies right now AT&T is in great shape.

In the early 2000's, Duane Ackerman CEO of Bellsouth, had a chance to buy the AT&T name and brand for 18 billion dollars. He decided this was too much and declined the opportunity. Imagine how different things would be today if that deal had been made. RS would not be in the picture.

(Ackerman also decided that fiber to the house was too expensive and "would never be needed" How did that work out?)

Randy is doing his best to gut any value T has as a company, for the sake of short term gains and bonuses.

The solution is of course to merge with TW, create a bigger monopoly and let Randy destroy that.

Then Randy will bail out with his golden parachute and life long benefits.

AT&T's only hope is Mark Wahlberg to be the man of the people : In a new ad campaign, AT&T gets Mark Wahlberg to demand new Terms and Conditions on behalf of the American people.

Meanwhile, CEO Randall Stephenson vowed to “make some adjustments” didn't he pay 40+ billion for this company? This guy is unreal, and "He attributed the weakness to competition from streaming services, as well as as cable companies offering with their triple-play service bundles"

What an innovator that Randall is. Bankrupt in the ideas department and soon bankrupt the company.
