Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Why the union won't strike

The CWA are cowards that have no intention of calling any strike. They know if they do there are enough RSCs that won't strike along with management employees to fill the COR stores in while directing any overflow of customers to the closest authorized retailer (usually right around the corner). The AR stores would love the increase in traffic. When the company isn't impacted by this all mighty strike they keep threatening, the CWA would be exposed as having 0 power, which would cause people to stop paying their dues and would hurt their bottom line. Plus the only reps that would strike are the ones who don't sell anything anyway.... more customers for the ones who do. Stores would probably perform BETTER. They are such a joke... running around their toilet seats. I literally laugh out loud every time I see one of those. Have some respect for yourself.

So many empty threats lately. Watch everyone show up to work tomorrow, clock in, and everything go exactly the same as it did Friday. Lol.

If the CWA decides to strike, I can absolutely guarantee you that we unionized workers would win and get a good contract IF (and only IF) we strike with absolute solidarity. Everybody needs to stick to the strike and we'd absolutely win--if it comes to this. There is great power in total solidarity, especially with 47,000+ workers. You can't cross the line folks and we will win! Keep saving as much as you can.

For retail, be realistic. The union can't do anything. AR will take over, and the union will collect dues until that time comes. I've even seen CWA Facebook posts geared towards the AR employees to try to unionize them. They are planning for the future and so should you.

Don't think because you are union that you get anything that employees at other companies do not get. At most you get the benefits of seniority, but pay and benefits I would argue are actually rather lame for all the big talk about what bargaining does. You aren't making more than Verizon reps in the same position. I'd argue you're making less. I know plenty of people over there.

They aren't back filling positions, so when the time comes to close a store, they will just shuffle people to surrounding stores. No need to pay a severance and usual attrition over a few months will right size the staffing. And what could the union do anyway? They can close any store they feel is necessary.

Unions just don't have a place in retail IMO. Sure you piggybacked some benefits from the larger group throughout the company, but overall it always seemed to me to be like the Netflix and Hulu accounts you keep going because they are so cheap, but don't really use. If you are tenured and get the schedule you want it's great. Otherwise it's like throwing money out the window.

When the time comes to chop heads, all are in play. Top performer or not, you are at risk. I know from experience. The company is going in another direction, and everyone is so overworked they don't have time to look out for anyone else.

Go ahead and work your butt off like always and make as much money as you can. Just don't be surprised when the time comes and make sure you are prepared. The CWA is looking out for itself, and only occasionally for you. A good Guage is to think of the hardest working people you know in the company. Are any of them the union folks? Most likely not. And if you don't even know your union hierarchy then I believe that's proof that they haven't done their duty.

Good luck to all! I truly mean that.

Do you have anything else to offer the world besides your I-wanna-be-a-T-manager personality? The company will screw you over just like it does everyone else, but of course then it won't be fair, right?

The wireless side is a joke because of PEOPLE LIKE ME?! People like me who exceed their goals, go to summit, and do more than is required? People like me who are thankful for a job that provides us with an opportunity to develop ourselves and become more than we ever thought we could? I'm sorry I don't think people LIKE ME make the wireless side a joke. It's people who stand around blaming everyone but themselves for their failures and problems. It's people who don't try to do what is asked, say it is impossible, but then whine and complain all day that they don't get paid as much as they used to. This job is harder than it used to be. Get used to it or get out of the way of people who are willing to.

Wow there's a whole lot of hate in this thread. Here's my opinion. I'm union and I will strike if thats what it takes. Will I and my other union workers win? Only the future knows. But my (and thousands of others) decision has been made. If the company wants a strike free future, then give the workers a fair contract with a future we can depend on.

The CWA has struck AT&T many times in the past, and just struck at Verizon for a month and won. I don't think you are very informed on the subject.

So Scabs are the solution to poor retail performance? That is some real sharp business thinking.

The union leadership needs to do better, better participation by members would make a difference. But union members need to feel that getting involved in the union would actually make a positive difference in their work live. Otherwise the union leaders start to feel like they are union bosses, and the company plays them like a fish.
