A lot of people from New York and Northern NJ are applying for jobs in Basking Ridge - is the commute worth the money? Seems like you would have no time to see your family during the week? How bad is the commute? Time wise? Financially? Is it worth it? Are people regretting not taking the package? Is anyone finding jobs closer in other companies at comparable pay?

Go find yourself a real a real career, there is absolutely Nothing to experience here , but regret
If you don't live nearby, it will be a grind going east to west unless you leave very early. Global real estate has for years been on a tear to reduce costs, no matter that it makes employees much less productive.
The most recent treats include the open office concept - designed to add seats - but no additional parking. So if you arrive after 8:45 you will have to park a mile away and wait for a shuttle.
And then there's the noise, lack of privacy for your screen of conversations, calls disrupted due to ambient noise etc. There's really no upside except for the bi-weekly check. Verizon has gone from a decent company to a place that treats its employees like inconveniences at best, parasites at worst.
Do you need a job ? answer yes.. then come on board.
Interesting enough how many ex employees return after some time to work as contractors for Verizon. So it must not be as bad as people say.
The open work space concept is just awful. All day everyday people in your business, conference calls blaring and every conversation up for grabs. Nobody gets work done and lets not forget about the tattlers that over hear everything and run to the boss with the nuggets of information that have found out~yeah you know who you are.
On top of all the points made above, don't forget about the new office design. Every day you will have to find a different seat, likely not the same one as yesterday. In a 10' radius, there will probably be three other people conducting meetings that you can easily hear.
Even Directors have to operate with these same rules.
That concept works for a 20-person startup but not for an office that has thousands of people.
I keep hearing about jobs being able to work remote/feom home....nothing shows in postings its just if you are lucky you have the option....The building is over head count.

I couldn't agree more, I know many folks this happened to.
I would only do that commute if I was actively working on an exit strategy. I used to commute from north jersey to Bedminster 5 days a week. at the current .gov mileage rate of 53.5 cents a mile that commute would cost me almost $14k a year....plus 15hrs a week windshield time....minimum
Getting to Basking Ridge is a complete nightmare. 287 is horrible. Only Verizon would locate their corporate headquarters in freakin Basking Ridge (nice residential area but no one wants to work in BR).

During AM or PM rush hour: The commute (Rt.287) is horrible. From BR to Rt.280 (1.5hrs to get to the entrance ramp ONLY) to get to Lincoln or Holland tunnel) 1.5 hrs minimum.
To GWB (287N to Rt 80 East) 2 hrs..during rush hour.
NJ Transit Train NY PENN to Summit NJ Shuttle (1.5 -2 hrs.) : 45 mins by shuttle to get to BR from Summit train station.
If you miss that Shuttle , you are truly .........well you know

No it is not worth it. VZ is a sinking ship and any attempt to stay with it to follow a job that will likely be cut in the not-too-distant future is ridiculous. VZ isn't the world, get the hell out and go elsewhere. You won't regret it.
That stressful commute would cause Erectile dysfunction (ED) or impotence dysfunction characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an ere----- of the thing during s-xual activity, add a nasty supervisor, 2 many to count ad probably endure divorce paying alimony, and her boyfriend drinking your beer, Forget......Aboutt it
Just because they are applying doesn't mean they will be hired. If they are, that commute is horrible and they still have to live with the constant worry of the next RIF. Take the money and run!
Been there done that...the commute is brutal on a daily basis
Maybe people are taking jobs there due to that is the location for the position and it is geared to what they are looking for. Most will only commute there twice a week and work remotely. Two days of the week is no big deal.
