Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Not so Good

Can you think of a more embarrassing sight, than what passes for a union leader these days? These guys are the most pathetic bunch of losers I've seen since my ninth-grade metal shop class.

I am convinced that hundreds of years from now, when anthropologists dig up the remnants of our culture and study our behavior, they will not be able to figure out, why most of the leaders of our major labor unions rolled over and let the company bosses destroy the lives of their members.

"Just how friggin' stupid were these guys?" the social scientists of the twenty-third century will wonder in amazement. Should future Americans run across a copy of this book, allow me to explain, just how stupid.

The leadership of the Communications Workers of America was so stupid that in 1992 they agreed to let AT&T start a "Workplace of the Future" program, in which labor and management would work "more closely together" in teams instead of in the traditional "confrontational" mode. The next year AT&T closed forty regional centers and eliminated 4,000 jobs. After six months of "cooperation" AT&T cut 15,000 more jobs. The union still didn't want to dissolve the "team" - and so a year later AT&T announced, it was firing another 40,000 employees! Only then did it dawn on the union leaders that AT&T was up to something.

Other union leaders have also stupidly fallen for this trend of "cooperation" with management called "Quality of Work Life". It is nothing more, than an effort to find new ways to eliminate jobs and bust unions.

Union leaders are so stupid that since the late seventies they have continually agreed to cut their members' wages and benefits, simply because the company asked them to! The companies have taken the newfound savings and instead of creating more jobs in the United States, they've built new plants overseas, resulting in the firing of the very American workers, who gave them that money!

  • all thanks to the union.

So what happened to our union leaders? Why did they go soft? Did they get too accustomed to their $100,000-a-year jobs and plush offices forgetting, where they came from? Or did we as union members forget our responsibility to remain vigilant? Decades ago monthly meetings at the union halls were packed. By the mid-1980s you could barely get a quorum. Union people were too busy being stupid and voting for Reagan and Bush. Or maybe we were just enjoying all those creature comforts that our union paychecks bought that we forgot to put down the remote control to our big-screen TV, get off the couch and get down to the union meeting.

And this time, with so many white-collar workers and managers being downsized, we'll soon have the chance to see our former bosses marching with us in solidarity on the picket line. Whatever hardships we've all been going through lately, it will have been worth it, just to see that day!

If you're unhappy with your union leadership then run for a position to improve things. The world will only get better if we work to improve things rather than complain about things. I'm happy to have an excellent company like ATT to work for and i'm happy to have a union to help me make sure I get my fair share. If either the company or the union wanes in power, then i'll help whichever side to strengthen. We all need both sides to be strong in order to keep our quality of lives up.

Every work place has a d---beat worker so that lame old saying is ridiculous. If you think that a company like ATT (And I worked there for 21 years Ameritech/SBC/at&t} is going to give you more than the contract if it's not there, or better benny's than the contract allows, your off your rocker. This is a company that has been laying off people since the early 2000s while making profits of 2 to 3 billion a quarter. Randy boy did not reduce his pay in what he claimed were hard economic times now did he? If we had less greedy and more ethical businesses we would not need unions. And as far as Unions if you look at how out of control the large Unions have become you would see that the average worker is stuck in the middle of a pile of crap. The CWA is a joke and fights for things like a drunk in a bar fight. They blame the membership for not getting involved but the leadership does not promote involvement because many do not agree with the way the Union is run. There is not happy medium because the fight is gone on the union side and ethics are gone on the business side.

Very interesting, the person who has been around since 1998 and has never seen a work stoppage. I haven't been around quite that long, but a long time, and I've never seen a work stoppage or anything close in Mobility. I am a RSM. Personally I don't mind my employees being in the union, hoping for better wages/benefits, or whatever. After all, whatever good things they get that benefits them will most likely benefit me also! Yes, I want my employees to be paid more, have better benefits, etc.

All that being said, if you think paying the union dues every month is going to get you anything other than a smaller bank account, then you are sorely mistaken. I've been watching it for years. They just want your union dues so they can bank your money and bankroll their sitting on their huge behinds, getting paid to not do actual work while they do "union activities." Any RSC that was smart would take those dollars for union dues and invest them in their 401(k). Union dues will do nothing but make you work longer. Retirement money will grow over time and one day you can retire and not worry about the union.

The CWA will NEVER strike in Mobility. Then they'd have to pay out from their strike fund, and the members would find that uh oh, there's not much money there for them, and now they can't pay their bills. Oh, and they don't want to give up all that money, either. And Mobility is excellent at planning for such a strike. And a strike benefits no one, least of all the reps. Think about it.

Why do you keep paying the union. I got out years ago after several attempts of them doing nothing to help me. They don't have the backbone of the older leaders and they are very incompetent lazy and want to just go to the union hall so they don't have to work. They can't help you anymore just get attorney and get out

I have worked in the SE region since 1998. I have seen the CWA sit by and do nothing on such issues as MSOC, 2% pay raises, making our bonus depend on the stock price, and now benefits are being cut left and right. The biggest weapon any Union has is to strike. We have not had one day of work stoppage since I have been here. The union reps accept every contract and say "it's the best we can do." Our last contract was so bad we asked the CWA Local President about a 1 day strike to

show T we meant business--she said "We don't want the managers to be mad at us" LOL

unions need to innovate and get beyond Republican vs. Democrat. There needs to be a revolution of proactive people within the unions. People in stores and everyone i know who works in the grocery store think the unions are worse than management. They care about hourly wages going up when salespeople want their commissions to go up. Millennials with no kids care about pay for the next 15-20 years, not benefits until they are 40+ Most importantly companies need to pay big if they want to automate someone out of the workforce or outsource them. They should have to pay outsourced or automated out employees residuals of the money saved and hand that over to the employee for the rest of their lives. i don't care if it's $5 per month but that should be for every year you worked for the company. you want robots, then get them into jobs that illegal immigrants do instead of jobs people are already doing! Sales people should be paid residuals on every existing customer just like they pay the dealers 3% of every customer's bills. Think they limit it to 3 years now though. you should get that for life like they do with the screen actors guild.

Look at the history of Labor in this country. Everything Labor gained was won with blood, sweat, and tears. Labor union organizers fought and died for basic work rights we've long taken for granted - until they're being taken away, like now, and like since Reagan busted the unions.

We need REAL unions with real leaders that will fight for Labor. That will shut down production, disrupt supply, and make the capitalist pigs feel the pinch for a change. We need REAL Labor-friendly politicians with the balls to get off the Wall Street / Corporate teet long enough to take a look around and fight for Workers.

It's going to be tough - tougher for the millennials than the last Labor crusades so many decades ago. Now we have a country of people that can't put down facebook, tweeter, doped up on Big Pharma's soma pills, jacked up the a-- in college debt an no jobs, bullied by corporations, entitled brats living with relative........, not so good....it is an understatement .

It goes both ways, 2 of the laziest technicians in Orlando FL, , that had vehicle accidents, one was a total loss in accident in which he was at fault , and were promoted to managers.
