Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

You people are all losers

You base your not being promoted or getting laid off on someone else. Seriously I have to laugh when I heard some of these positions got laid off. Maybe if you took the training that the company provided and went the extra mile you would not be in the position your are in. I have seen just a few people at the West Region March of Dimes Walk and that is what it takes to be seen and heard. If you just "do your job" you won't get anywhere. You have to show value in that you care about everything the company is involved in. Involve yourself with an ERG and attend their events. Go to charity events and donate to the PAC and United Way. Make yourself be heard and maybe you wouldn't be another loser who sits around and complains about a company that is trying to compete and do the right thing!

It makes no difference how much anyone 'retools'. The move with the debt incurred by continued acquisitions means that if the company wants to continue their dividend structure to shareholders, plenty of fully qualified (many times over qualified), high-performing employees will be laid off dependent on where they are and how much their org/area is costing in operating costs. The company can cut those costs dramatically by hiring on a vendor like Sitel, Sutherland Global, Alorica, IBEX, etc. No healthcare cost, no union to deal with, and disposable workforce they don't have to worry about the cost of replacing. This Transformation 2020 is a distraction while all of this has gone on behind the scenes. If you haven't figured that out yet, I am not surprised you are caught off guard when surplus notifications are handed down. I have 6 more months before I can leave and never look back. I'm legacy DIRECTV (that's right, I'm not nor will I be AT&T), and AT&T has basically ruined what DIRECTV worked to build over 2 decades. We have taken 2 steps back in all areas with the exception of some technology (since we were about similar but not as expansive technology), and if one more uneducated idiot from AT&T upper management basically acts like I'm some idiot with my 2 college degrees plus 20 years experience, I might tell them where they can take their opinions.

Not necessarily an age related view, just dishonest and clearly pro-corporate management.

I think it is an intentional effort to make the issue differences be age related in order to let the company off the hook, But in fact it is just the company trying to divide us, and put greed and profits above the lives of people.

T does not discriminate, it screws over the younger workers for for profits just as readily as it screws over us older folks.

If you are non-management, you will be surplussed according to seniority. No amount of a** kissing, charity work, or education will save you. We have many techs where I work that have 35 to 45 years with AT&T and will not retire. One lady said "I don't have anything else to do" Those of us with 15-17 years sweat out the surplus announcement every quarter.

OP-- you must be the biggest idiot on this site. Why the Hell should I give my money to a PAC when those PACs and deals they make are causing so many hard working, loyal employees to get laid off!!?? How about you donate to me-- where is this " we care about you" BS when it comes to us? I'm 34, my fiancée is 39, healthy as a horse then last year was diagnosed with Cancer. Did T offer to help me? No-- but I was forced to pay the United way and harassed to donate to a PAC. SCREW YOU. I hope you have fun networking , you'll probably need it, otherwise why are you on a layoff site??

OP sounds like a millennial- single and with no other responsibilities or life, or has someone who takes care of all life's responsibilities for him\her. You shouldn't have to devote your life fully to your employer in order to keep your job, although that's what the new culture seems to be demanding.

Like they say in Real Estate, LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION. It doesn't matter what all you have accomplished, or if you are the top leader in your department. When it comes time to chop heads, the powers that be could care less. All they see is your name on an organizational chart and your location. Your boss may tell you to get your numbers up, work harder, etc etc, blah blah blah, to save your jobs. It's all a bunch of lies. They are just trying to get your mind off of things.

I call BS! A lot of people did all the required company training for 2020 and guess what they're out of a job! Obviously you don't work for the T.... or you're some manager that has no clue what he's talking about. Either way go troll someplace else

Loser? Is a person or thing that loses or has lost something, especially a game or contest. Not everyone wants to play politics nor give up family time to be popular or claim a title. You live in a fantasy sweetheart, that is not how corporate America works. It is a real shame you do not value diversity meaning all standards of living. You may wanna check yourself.

Just Randy trying to sell kool-aid.

Is this what you get paid $77,808 every day of the year to do?

Try giving some thought to keeping jobs here or maybe even think about improving the cell network?

Most of these replies are dead on. Decisions are based 100% on location and org chart. It matters not one tiny bit what you've accomplished, volunteered for, butts you've kissed. I know of one engineer that literally saved the company over $5 million dollars in the previous year, documented and easily verified. Didn't matter, he was swept up and released because of location. I suspect the OP is upper management.

It has been my experience that layoff decisions are made based on org charts and org layers. I've seen both bums and high achievers get cut and there is no rhyme or reason behind it other than management and their consultants drawing X's over existing positions. Charity and PAC contributions have never been considered. And those things are supposed to be anonymous. The only thing that secures a future in the business world is your skill set and the money you have saved while working. If you aren't working at maximizing those two things you are and always will be in trouble.

That may be your view OP however late last year many talented, dedicated Network Force Load Analysts were surplused. A lot of these individuals were involved as you suggest and yet they were still selected. They were selected based on their geographical location and nothing else. You're lucky if you don't get surplused and that's all .. just lucky. A few of them got other jobs in the company but most didn't.
