Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The solution to incompetence

Periodically evaluate your supervisors, thohg rigurous testing using third party companies, to see which supervisors are effectively doing their job. Most ssupervisors are great, but some have no business being where they are today. A supervisor should be promoted to that position based on their potential leadership abilities and quality of work, not because they have “put in their time”. It seems that the less work one does, the more likely that person will get promoted.

Previous poster is correct. Right or wrong, the general company policy is for the managers to manage people. They don't need to know great detail about the jobs their direct reports are doing because they won't be doing it. They will simply be "managing" the workers.

Boy is that right on. We had a few in OCATS but they retired in 2015 and now we are seeing the results.

In the 80's the Bell companies made decisions to promote people to management without need to be technically competent in the area of business they were promoted to. Only manage the people.

This caused many people to be promoted to jobs they were not qualified to be in. Many managers were then promoted further and they promoted people under them using the same reasons. ATT and the various companied need people who are fully technical competent in their jobs to be able to guide people and insure competent completion of the work. There are very few 2nd levels and 1st levels who can stand up to their bosses when it's needed and correct problems. Currently the company is using methods to dump people only based on executive numbers which are based on expensed and costs dictated by their bosses. These numbers are based on the greed of the executives for bonuses and desire to look good. Who looses ? everyone ! It will only be a few more years before ATT is either gone or drastically changed. The foolish desire to be a wireless only company will soon be the doom for the American worker. Lower employees costs will drive the company to look over seas and never look back. Layoffs? don't be stupid to think it will always be the other guy. You are next. 2020 is soon

My advice-join a smaller company. AT&T is not the place to be if you're looking for a promotion based on merit and experience. That's ok , but when you see that you need to make a decision about yourself and career. My suggestions is move on- that's what the those that are talented do or have integrity do!
