Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Too bad Verizon are going broke and can't afford to make MLK a "real" holiday rather than a "floating" holiday.

Poor Verizon would go broke if they had to give workers another holiday without taking something else away.

I thought we were all about diversity?

I thought "integrity is the core of who we are". I thought "we share our success with the community to make the world in which we work better than it was yesterday"

I thought we were "exploring unconscious bias"?

Maybe we should "explore" giving a federal holiday to all employees?

@1iaf Management doesn't get overtime, try again. Union already gets the day off so stop adding dumb input to what has been discussed and what management already knows.

In the People's Communist Republic of Assechusetts, MLK is a paid Holiday. They are considering a Holiday for Mao. Seems only natural.

Here is the real reason why it's not a holiday...Because of all the other Holidays with the exception of Christmas Day... EVERYBODY PUTS IN FOR OVERTIME AND WORKS IT! costing the company a ton of money....MLK day would be no different.

So the handful of people that actually want observe Martin Luther King Birthday still can and have their respective holiday off with pay.

Again EVERYBODY would work it a holiday overtime pay.

@stf - Not for me... I was former MCI... they took MLK but gave me a personal day. I had 3 wks vacation plus 10 or 11 personal days, don't remember now. More paid time off than any other job I have ever had outside of the military.

Why you are complaining? Takings floating holiday anytime you want is way better than to take fixed holiday at specific day. At least for me.

Well one thing you have to say about the "managers" (I.e. non-union folks) at Verizon, they are the dumbest smart people you'll ever meet. The execs steal from them daily. And they in turn blame the union and their peers. And they gotta love the new cafeteria style seating the execs are handing down to the onshore "managers". I'd bet the offshore folks have way better cribs.

It used to be that management would get all those holidays off and their personal days. So for those screaming use a personal day, note that more has been taken away from management and you never realized it. Yes same number of personal days you get today were given then and yet holidays seem to disappear.

Yes Union gets most federal holidays and some personal days as well.

Isn't it strange what used to be a somewhat humble blue-collar job is now better than most white-collar jobs?

It isn't because the Union is getting more than they used to, it is because you are getting less.

National Holidays should be for everyone. Maybe you would enjoy a day off too if you weren't such tough guys. Good for you we are all really impressed.

@rdi - you want federal holidays? Go work for the federal government! I'll take the personal days and decide which days I want off.

Presidents Day and Veterans Day are paid holidays for associates. (Thanks, Union!)

If your management, normal policies apply, i.e., Come in and not be noticed, stay home and not be missed.

Well, the last time I checked President's Day, Veteran's Day and Columbus Day does not count at Verizon either. If you want them off, use a personal day.

I don't know "exploring unconscious bias" sounds pretty complicated.

We are a telco are we really qualified to explore the unconscious? Wouldn't it be easier to just give MLK off?

@rlb

MLK is a Federal Holiday not a "personal day". Other Federal Holidays besides MLK include Veteran's Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day..etc.

Guess which one doesn't count at Verizon?

Have another Kool Aid bro?

One for me and one for my RIF'd homies (spills some Kool Aid on floor)

VZ is anti American and few people have better represented Americans than MLK.

Those "personal holidays" are for that purpose. That way you can take off any day you so choose to honor be it if you are African American, Jewish, muslim, Hispanic, or white. You can choose to honor MLK by taking this day off. Or use it for your family vacation like everyone else. Yeah choice is yours.

On my side note I would rather have presidents day off at it better breaks up the long grind till the summer
