The management here in El Segundo is quiet scandelous. The only way for upward mobility is to screw your way up the ladder. One of our VPs had an affair and to keep it quiet he mentored his mistress upward promoting her three times. She rose through the ranks in about five years. She failed miserably running a new marketing group last year and missed all the targets and was shipped off to a new position, but everyone knows the real story. There have been several of these situations always on the hush. Managers that are scratching each other's back or more! The think they're Hollywood celebs and try to get invited to vendor parties and talk about how important they are and pretend they can get them a tv show or exclusivity on content, etc. A lot of the marketing managers party after hours (usually not getting into the office until noon), and always playing golf. Seriously, if Hqs knew how some managers acted they would be horrified. Those of us in the trenches want to keep a job, but we need solid respectable leadership. We don't have many good managers. So much fake.

Amen. As an ARSM, whose bright eyes thought an ARSM could oversee COR, Authorized Retail and National Retail. Oh, Wait!! All Account Executives just were informed they, too are gone. Then, it comes to the many IRU Managers. Now, there is one for Kentucky and one for Tennessee. That makes sense. Oh, wait. That makes CENTS.

Where is the old AT&T Wireless, SunCom, BellSouth Mobility, Cingular Wireless and the smaller companies when the employees could not wait to get to work??????

When I was GTEMobilnet, the employees were treated much as the AT&T field folks are. They created a new name: Get The Employ Mobilnet. Who could come up one for AT&T?

The CEO keeps preaching to increase the money for the stockholder. Does he not realize most managers are stockholders?

Guess I am bitter, upset, pi**ed, hurt and frustrated that loyalty, tenure and great results no longer mean anything to Corporate Dallas AT&T but look how much the company paid for the name in Dallas - AT&T Stadium. Wonder what the return on that EXPENSE has been?

I have seen some competent managers, But they are rare. Most are nice enough, but just don't have the talent to be a "coach" like they want them to....a rsc could sell they entire store and get in trouble because they didn't ask enough lifestyle questions!

"The AT&T politics acts like a cancer because those who suggest good idea's or better ways of doing things are totally ignored. "

Don't forget OR surplused. I've seen people with really great ideas ignored to the extent that they then become problems for directors who don't like the "boat being rocked" or the status quo disrupted.

Randall needs to really look into this cultural cancer whereby leaders punish those with great ideas. When surplus was announced last year, we were told to "keep our mouths shut" and "stay under the radar".

How can you innovate staying under the radar or with your mouth shut for that matter?

If in fact you are a director *typical management; on your phone instead of working. No wonder at&t is in the toilet. Why not do the job you were hired for instead of trolling the websites. AT&T is on the right path in regards of downsizing management, what a waste of money. Responsible adults do not need to be micro managed.

he "office politics" and the real effort to continue "silo" entities within the corporation are difficult to manage at times and can overwhelm some individuals. The AT&T politics acts like a cancer because those who suggest good idea's or better ways of doing things are totally ignored. The managers have serious "trust" issues with their direct reports and should never have hired those individuals if in fact they feel they cannot be trusted.

@wbw - As a director? You sound so typical:

1) Who is " your people" a$$hole?

2) WORK, WORK WORK. It's not about how many hours you put in you idiot, it's about your leadership, vision and emplowering those you serve...IE "your people".

You must be a director because in your few short sentences you sound like a complete dik...

@LfdL2fE-1fwt I agree 100%. I've been on the receiving end of this. The corporate culture is overwhemingly toxic. All of this is instigated from the top down. Unfortunately nothing will change. This board will continue to grow...apathy will continue to thrive.

Funny management is defending their work ethic even they are first on the chopping block. Prove yourself in the workplace, not a layoff site.

In my huble opinion 2 out of 10 managers are capable professionals, Over the years I have witness Retaliation as a common occurrence in this company, I could write a Guide for Vindictive Bosses, something that thrives in our company, many capable and successful professionals are not longer with us , all because their leadership did not tolerate dissent, how it works follow this schedule,

1) Hold The employee Back

2) Raise Expectations on The employee

3) Isolate The employee

4) Smear Thevemployee

5)Dilute His Role

6) Ambush the employee

7)Pit the Team Against them

I worked with a tech who was suspended several times and on the list for being the worst at his job for repair repeats. He sat around in his truck all day playing a handheld video game. Guess what? He was asked if he wanted to be a manager and he jumped at the opportunity to do less than he had been doing for years. How can something like this happen? He was constantly in the D bucket.

In IT there are some good, competent managers but they are rare. With all the outsourcing, many have hundreds of direct reports.

It seems like my managers have nothing better to do than to just sit around and play games on their phone. The real work only happens when they get railed on in Conference calls and they have to crack the whip from their high tower. I probably wouldnt qualify for management ever, because I run my mouth too much about how inefficient the company is and how there is career paths anymore. Just even the time and effort just to put in simple orders is maddening.

At AT they are appointed from above. Maddeningly, key jobs often go to the most politically astute rather than the most competent, until now I can only remember 1 manager that actually pulled his own weight, and made a difference in the teams I was part of.

I think of the countless hours, devoted to supervising my team's work, the problem is the inefficiency stems from a top-heavy management model that is both cumbersome and costly, and without any doubt incompetent in nature, if in doubt, ask yourselves how much influence does your current manager have in your future careers aspirations... I am sure you you will be surprised
