AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson: ‘Your skill set is two years in duration, max’ Get Ready!!!

Under CEO Randall Stephenson’s leadership, AT&T (NYSE: T) has made waves for its aggressive approach to workforce retraining, an approach that puts the onus on individual employees to keep their skills up to date.

Speaking to college students earlier this week, the Dallas telco's boss again touched on the idea, urging employees to continuosly adapting to new technologies even after joining the workforce.

Inevitably, the rhetorical promises AT&T executives make today to you are total b---s---—but they might just get away with it. It would be crazy to expect anything other than a monstrous telecom conglomerate growing out of the year 2017 The Oxford Dictionary says that the word of the year is “post-truth.” Who knows what could happen next.

I heard many don't have a job other than training . Now how sad is that if true!

I have 2 specialties, which require about 90 hours per specialty, and I have no idea what I could or would do with them. I also have no idea why anyone higher up actually thinks these things are worth the paper they are printed on. I have 4 years to go and will stay as long as they keep me but these things are worthless. If anyone is learning anything from these video's then those are the people that should be let go on the grounds of 'not being very smart'. I also wish people wouldn't throw politics in this either. The worthless training started during the Obama administration and will continue well into the Trump administration. And it doesn't matter who the president is, this company's goal is to reduce their head count in the coming years.

I will say that I have been told by a few people senior (I'm a 1st level in engineering) to me that 2020 is really more like 2025. But it doesn't mean the company isn't going to continue to reduce head count. I'm older, and without a degree, and if I was younger with a degree I would not stay at this company. I know times are tough but if the younger ones with degrees can find a company that is expanding, and not contracting, you should really think hard about leaving. Just my opinion though.

Worst CEO I've ever seen...maybe he can start a used car sales fleet when he's gone. Just don't expect to drive them far off the lot before they crap out....

LOL. AT&T invests in training then lays off workers and replaces them with offshored contractors. All Randal's talk is just BS at best, or worse lies.

I's time for people to start making comments on the ATT blogs where the idiot may see them or one of his lackeys may. This one is not it.

Shorted sighted bullshy!t from the number one BS artist in corporate leadership.

Firstly, there are soft skills which in my opinion can TRUMP hard skillset. Emotional intelligence, calculated risk taking, conflict management, negotiation, etc. Its the things that build a culture over and above who can write the best code, who can take a product the fastest to market etc.

This is why Randy is his own dinosaur he speaks of.

He doesn't get it!!!!

AT&T does not value people - we are not an asset

Here are the titles of employees that were laid off in the last 6 months - CFO, SVP of Engineering, SVP of Product, SVP of Sales, VP of Sales, VP of Marketing, VP of Product, Sr. Director of Product, Director of Engineering & countless other IC level employees. You can imagine how much depth remains in the leadership ranks after so many senior level folks are let go. Company fires employees arbitrarily and without any due process. I’d be surprised if half the folks that are still there aren’t already looking for other jobs.

Top management has no integrity. Besides mis-representing product capabilities to prospects,

In a company meeting, CEO acknowledged a rumor circulating internally that 30+ people will imminently be laid off and flat out denied that there was any truth to that rumor. In the next 3 weeks, 30+ people were laid off. So the rumor was completely true, then why be dishonest with your employees?

Global ordering spends 3/4th of time helping the sales team close deals. No one from Engineering reports to the ATO, pricing team and neither is the BSO involved in any product development initiatives.

Engineering team is very weak. Except for a handful of smart people, most are either fresh grads or have limited experience, since all the seasoned technologists found jobs in better companies.

Our HQ almost always has a deserted look. On any given day, 3/4th of employees are “working from home”. For some teams, there are days when every single member is missing. CTO comes into office probably 2-3 days a month. CEO is there every day, but almost never walks the floor to interact with employees.

Here’s a question to management : How many ex-employees (even if you only ask those that left Ensighten on their own) do you honestly think will say yes to working for you again in future? If you’re unable to list anyone, that should tell you enough about the kind of culture you’ve built at AT&t

He's only brilliant at ruining an already failing corporate culture instilling fear via HIS and Donovan's version of the "pivot", by failing to pivot himself and creating a really innovative company that makes great things. Just buy buy buy and lie lie lie - to the shareholders.

I hope he is including himself in his assertion, thanks to the $175 billion in debt, he will be puting the company under andmaking it the largest non-bank corporate issuer with debt larger than the positions at some financial firms. It's seen as one of the largest risks to the deal, noted the New York Times. To fund the cash portion of the Time Warner deal, AT&T plans to issued around $40 billion in new debt. It had already borrowed to purchase DirecTV, for which it paid $48.5 billion.

Working for leadership thar we do not respect can be difficult, The single biggest determinant of engagement is this relationship is the way it affects everything from how long you stay to your discretionary effort. People that joined the AT&T brand of the past, are leaving, the toxic work environment continues to perpetuated by the current leadership" as per OP subject line
