Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Follett have laid off so many Follett employees that are US Citizen but and increasing the HB1 visa workers.

The HB1 workers are not skilled more than American workers but instead they get a much lower wage so it's cheaper to keep them and fire American workers. Such unfair business practice because American workers have to train them to do the work. It is time the HB1 Visa program be evaluated. American students are graduating with equal education to those of HB1 Visa students but cannot find jobs because of corporate America hiring cheap labor. Basically HB1 Visa encourages companies to cut American job opportunities right in our own backyard. Follett s---s donkey balls.

Follett supported 401B visas when I was there, as well as using contractors who barely spoke English. When I brought up the fact they should be hiring Americans, I got a scowl. This all while laying off long term employees.

The brain drain at FSC was eye opening. I'd get out now before they make the choice for you!

"We need to ensure that this system is not manipulated to undercut domestic wages or displace American workers," said Hatch, in a statement. "Unfortunately, a handful of bad actors has created a great deal of unease about H-1B visas by misusing the system to offshore jobs to foreign workers. We've all seen the news reports."

Hatch may be referring to stories such as the displacement of workers at Disney, Follett, Southern California Edison, New York Life, Cengage Learning, SunTrust Banks, Hertz, MassMutual, Health Care Service Corporation, Emblem Health, the University of California at San Francisco, and other organizations.

Nationality doesn't matter, but if they are legally able to work in the US does matter. Regardless, the H-1B visa abusers that Follett engages have a perfect track records. 0% success rate on all projects.

That was the point; does a worker's nationality matter when they'll do your job for less? The fact the company is bringing someone from another country is irrelevant. The fact that you're losing your job is what is alarming (to you or your family). Therefore regardless of the source of labor, the fact that management is slashing payroll with no regard to employee loyalty or morale, is the issue.

Please get your facts straight. Follett employs many employees from all nationalities, races, genders and religious beliefs. This is not an issue of fearing foreigners. H1B visas were implemented to allow non US citizens to work in the US provided they have significant technical skills that were not readily available in the US workforce. Offshore providers and their clients (US companies) are bypassing the intention of the H1B and moving low cost, moderate skill employees into the US job markets at significantly lower rates. Companies benefit because they are able to replace existing employees with lower wage foreign worker on H1B's. If you have been following the news lately, you understand Congress is looking at establishing a minimum salary for any H1B visa holders (ie 100k). Infosys, TCS and all the other providers have already indicated that this would force them to provide high skilled workers only for H1B's to justify paying them 100k or more. To answer your question, I would not want to lose my job to anyone but if I did to a recent grad and a legal citizen eligible to work in the US, it would be ethical. Of course you know that salaries are dictated by labor supply and demand (like most economic theory) so if the skills are similar so is the salary. There are rules of who can enter and work in the US that are in place for the benefit of existing US citizens.

Quit fearing foreigners! Would it be better if a kid fresh out of college, form Conway, Arkansas or Denton, Texas, or Yakima, WA was hired to take your job? Nope. You'd still be out of work and the company will have slashed payroll.

There is the offensive part; the company see you as bloated payroll.

Big question time; why stay? There are job to be had. Find one. Document your value, skills, experience and demonstrate to an employer how much better their life gets when they hire you!

For what it's worth, HB1 visas are only supposed to be used if the company can show they made an effort to find a citizen to fill the role and they were unable to. If Follett is doing this, they could be in breach of the rules of the program.
