Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Surplused in TX

After 2 decades of dedicated service with near perfect attendance, I was notified today that AT&T no longer needs me. I need some guidance from anyone in TX that has gone through severance/unemployment. Can I get unemployment and severance and if I agree to leave early and not look for a job within AT&T, will that disqualify me for unemployment? I really don't want to waste what's left of my working life working for a company that you can never really feel safe at.

Why do people in Texas think they are safe?

Look internally if you want, but my internal applications are now coming back with thanks but no thanks form letter. So chances of getting a a job in AT&T are nil unless you know the hiring manager. 2020 training is useless and won't save you. I haven't done squat since losing my job 4Q16 because of a death in the family shortly after my surplus. I need to update my linked in and see if anyone bites. Oh the person asking any over 40 women? Yes women are hit. Especially over 40 women and those in California. Doesnt matter what your race is, AT&T is very good at EEO spreading.

Go to the MESA meetings offered by HR. But selecting to leave is equivalent to accepting to retire. Thus, you can't get unemployment, but you will get the X months add on.

I was approached by many recruiters via Linkedin, some paid for all the travels expenses while interviewing, and I accepted one of the offers, 6 weeks after I left AT&T

@1bjc-Only you can decide what's right for you, but I can share my experience.

I was surplused almost 2 years ago along with several peers when our department was eliminated from our building. There aren't that many good paying jobs in my part of the country, and the company gave us the option of returning to the phone. I went ahead and took them up on their offer. Yes, it was a pay cut, but the way I saw it, if I lasted 4 months, I would make what I would receive for my surplus payout and still have insurance.

I'm still here, and while I LOVED my previous position, I still have a paycheck coming in.

Thank you all for responding. I will be getting my LinkedIn profile ready, I've been too busy working and 2020 training to do anything outside of Amplify. These messages brought some peace of mind tonight. Again, thank you.

SOUTH FLORIDA SURPLUS

I need some guidance: I've worked at AT&T for 8yrs, I got my surplus letter today, I'm torn between looking for another position within the company, and just getting out of there and never look back. I've been the most dedicated, reliable and proud employee since day one, and this is what I get. By the looks of it, they're selecting who they like, not who had better performance, skills, experience and training as mentioned on their January 5th call. Should I even bother trying to stick around?

Yes you can leave early after you receive your letter, I gave them 2 weeks, as far as Unemployment, make sure you don't get any checks from AT &t during your unemployment period , the state tends to audit people, and may request money back, if you received any money during the unemployment period.

I was in your shoes 1 year ago, 22+ years with company, after a surplus, the company does not longer need you, I think this is important, and that decision was made by you manager, thinking about getting a new position? It is not longer an option at AT&T, if you enjoy working there, but if the opportunities aren't created for you, leave. Your future employer would love to know how much you value yourself and your skill set locating new opportunities, it is all about value!!!

At AT&T , those who stay in the same position for five or more years– Job clingers get paid much less over their career than those who leave the company, fortunately AT&T has a bad reputation, and hiring managers and recruiters know that.

Wondering about life outside AT&T, as I read some of the comments, i can see the fear and frustration that many have expressed about an uncertain career, sometimes walking away is the only way to win at AT&T, Never waste your time trying to explain yourself to people who have proven that they are committed to misunderstanding you, in Most segments, the toxic work environment, lack of good managers, and the workforce of the future ruse, have created An anticompetitive work environment for career growth and opportunities. What is next for you?

Sorry to hear. I can't answer the unemployment question for your state. For mine you would still be able to draw unemployment regardless of which option you took.

That said, if I were you I would stay on the full 60 days and "look" for a job. Don't even bother applying to one if you know you don't want to stay. There is no requirement that you apply to a certain number of jobs. But there are certain requirements regarding acceptance if you apply for jobs.

And that way you're drawing a paycheck that much longer.
