Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

The T Trap

So many of us working hard to become a security engineer through AT&T’s Workforce Reskilling and Pivot Program. In fact, our group was among the first to participate in the Workforce Reskilling program when it launched in 2013. At the time, there were only a few classes and tools to work with, today the program is pretty much irrelevant, T constant and changing technology road map, provides no career progression time table , instead try high end industry wide accepted certifications such as , CIISP/ CCNA/ CCNP, those you can take with you wherever you go

In the last 3 years, more than half of my coworkers were layoff, unable to compete for technology jobs, the majority are back to school, many of them earned 23 badges, taken more than 100 classes and came close to graduating, many werevconsidered SME's, but this only happens in the T vacuum.

by now I had realize that T is no the career brand oriented company once was, It’s exciting to learn about truly cutting-edge technology, seek your own path, more rewarding and less deception

IT security work will eventually be outsourced also, but it will be one of the last. At that point any pretense of a long term business strategy will be long gone.

It's not what you know it's who you know. I work in the Boyer organization. As expected he surplused a knowledgeable but not too good looking older employee in this last round.

Good post! many senior managers rise to their level of incompetence, every day offers evidence of this thesis, every day I hear of someone being promoted because he was recommended by a powerful director friend of the area manager, or, most recently, that an unqualified female was promoted to a managerial position because she was the lover (secretly), I guess everyone knew, but who cares right?.

You would be better off getting certifications like ITIL, CISSP, and others that companties recognize. It would also help in you job transition to a real company

The reality is that no one saves their job or advances their career through the T training programs. There is some value to be had there but it is mainly through the effort you make and how you can use it in finding work with another company.

It seems to be part of the Big Lie to keep the workforce docile and on the job until T can figure out how to outsource the work.

Upper management is largely exempt from competency checks, it is all about how well you s--- up and to whom.

When in doubt, Just look at you current supervisor, "it is not what you know", I like to think that competence is the most important determinant of professional success at AT but if it is, it is only When you have thw right connections, Anyone who is expert in a particular field can point to someone preeminent in that field who do not know enough to justify his or her lofty position , Usually, their relative incompetence is more or less a private matter, attested to only by workers in the same field; but there are those who fail publicly without loss of reputation, something that is widely accepted by the CEO, Consider My current Director, where most experts have their performance actually measured and who can be seen to fall short of the industrial averages year after year. Yet they prosper. But years later he was failing at managing, It is easy to understand how someone in a lesser position who slogs through his work every day, doing the best he can, becomes resentful
