Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Perception versus reality, be smart and plan ahead.

Folks, let's be honest... this is BUSINESS. This is not a marriage or a relationship with obligations and ZERO conditions. This is not "unconditional love", it's a mutual business relationship that comes with conditions and no guarantees. Think about it like this, as an employee you have the right to resign if another company makes you a better offer, or you need to move to a new city or simply stop working to care for a loved one, that is YOUR right to choose based on your needs. The same logic applies here. This is business and it has not been a secret you must keep yourself relevant as we move towards 2020. We as employees and individuals have a responsibility to always have a plan and be financially prepared for this type of situation. Seriously this shouldn't be a surprise, over the last couple of years the message has been loud and clear. I made a decision to become debt free, utilize the tuition reimbursement program, network inside and outside the company, find ways to keep my self relevant and work without losing focus over these recent changes. That proactive mindset to plan along with the positivity to prosper in this environment is the best that I can do. The rest is up to God. Cheer up folks, this is not about life and death. It's a job and at most a career change. You'll be fine!

Don't waste your time trolling the internet, update your resume, go to a seminar, offer to do side by sides with positions within your org. Think outside the box! You will never be free if your are trapped within the box ;)

So everyone thinks they will be ok and the CEO is crazy. Maybe so. Remember the name at&t is just that. A name they wanted because SBC was an unknown. Ever wonder why the change from upper case AT&T to lower case at&t?

Because the SBC leaders were not as good and could not stand up to reality. A lot of companies were taken over and sadly things dropped. Remember the old days? Never will they return when the company is all about profit and going wireless and dumping wire line service.

Yes, yes. Known that for 20 years sweety. No one's job is secure. Had Notebart tell everyone that in 1990s, plus Hay Studies, and "rightsizing". But where does one find the time to do all that? Also you can do all that and yes, no guarantees!

It is the business of putting profits over people and trying to make that activity normal and OK.

It's just business people, below is just one example.

"Volkswagen is cutting 30,000 jobs over the next three years as it tries to boost profits in the wake of a huge emissions scandal".

This isn't rocket science

@ "Xanax must have kicked in"

Are you saying this dude's chill comments and advise = he/she must be on prescribed meds?

I actually totally agree with his post. It reminds me of everyone who is out there protesting the election results, destroying property shouting he is not our president. Come on! Do these people honestly believe that changes anything? Nope nada!

I didn't vote for him but I have to accept he is president and wasting my energy protesting is just a waste of time.

Harassing anyone with some positivity on here actually sounds like someone who should be prescribed xanax or is prescribed but ain't taking any.

Why is any of this a surprise to anyone? It's simple business strategy and all of the signs have been loud and clear. Mergers and acquisitions always lead to duplicate job functions, titles, and overall support staff. Changes in technology is another factor. Our world is quickly evolving and this company continues to expand. Downsizing is only the logical thing to do, obviously this helps reduce cost and consequentially enables the company to quickly respond to changes and ensure profitability. It's that simple. It's not personal, is just BUSINESS. Trolling the internet fueling and fostering negative emotions doesn't help you or anyone else. On the other hand, looking for additional insights and try to keep yourself as informed as possible is totally different and I highly encourage.

Best regards to everyone,

A-

Sounds like the writer of this post is someone who is in middle or front line management, and truly drinks and believes in the ATT Kool-aid. You keep getting pushed to make more unrealistic numbers, and play their game, but the truth is you are expendable at anytime. Another factor is that manager who seems to be a "great person" is going to do whatever it takes to make himself look good, and if that means pressuring people to quit, or terminating them, he will.

What a idiot post!!....when I started at Pac Bell you were like family. And were treated with respect and the company had Honor and integrity!

Not AT&T, they want to take, take, and take and then treat you like a number or tolit paper that can be flushed away at will!! People have lives, family's to support gave most if their time, energy life to make this company prosper. And some bean counter a-- that has never worked in the field or even talked to a customer surpluses you before you can reach your full retirement pay!! That's the Devil not a business my friend!!!.....all I can say is Karma will win in the end bad people get what's coming to them!!!

This op comment is amusing to me. The father of the word "pivot", is using the same used car mechanism circa 1989/wallstreet - to run an "innovative" company, by not making one thing - just using a blank checkbook to buy bad/impulsive deals.

"When relevancy goes really wrong"

The Chairman is a wordsmith who can't/won't take his own advice.

Trolling on the internet???? Lol is that what you're doing????

Being surplused ia a like a death and just like any loss their are phases and anger is one, hopefully acceceptance is ultimately another.

You can't tell people how and in what manner to be pissed. The idea is to not stay pissed for so long it compromises your ability to move forward.

And some surplus' are personal, esp. if you're targeted. I have a general council relative and he says if you think your layoff is personal it probably is/was.

But you do have to move forward. Better company's are out there. Unfortunately when people leave, they don't come back to this board to consistently preach the gospel.

If they were paying people $1 per hour, they would be trying to figure out how to outsource to 50 cents per hour. There is no limit to the greed.

It is not an equal relationship, they demand loyalty and hard work and in return we get stress, overwork and uncertainty.

It IS about life, the quality of our life and our families. To Randy we are just numbers that he can cut to fatten his bonus, we have no value as human beings. The corporate leaders who destroy families without feeling are sociopaths.

It is not up to God, it is up to ourselves and what we can do to fight the greed.

This is business and it has not been a secret you must keep yourself relevant as we move towards 2020.

Keeping yourself "relevant" doesn't matter to Randy. If it did he wouldn't allow many of those who have been impacted by surpluses to leave the company.

No, this company doesn't care about having skilled employees, they're laying off here at home and going with contractors in foreign nations.
