During EWA, I had no choice but to travel many states away from my home to work in a job that was not of my own doing. I was called a scab many times. Calling me that didn't do a thing to my self worth. A scab forms over a wound caused by something else. It protects the wound from infection setting in and gives the wound a chance to heal. I am a wife, mother and grandmother,and if a scab, that's fine. I kept infection from setting into our household finances while our home was wounded with the strike. Actually, I was paid extremely well while doing a "scab" job. For those people who keep using the word scab to describe those who had to do the work, would you not have done the same to take care of your family? Or would you rather just say cruel things that really make you look bad in the end?

Unions such as the CWA are a business, and just like any other business, their primary motivation is to make a profit. I see many post regarding layoffs and how if there was a Union, that wouldn't happen. You can keep telling yourself that, but in reality, the Unions do not protect jobs. You are on a layoff site now, so look around at Union jobs and you know what you'll see...Layoffs, just like the non-union jobs.

ioon You are ignorant in your attempt to point out ignorance. What the union "Bosses" make is public knowledge to the whole. The "Bosses" are voted in for 4 year terms. "Bosses come and go at the whim of the whole. Yes politics are involved and regimes come and go but just as in all democratic systems the voters get what they deserve. As far as what they make I see it as fair as It is not even a multiple of what I make. As long as I and my colleagues make a handsome living and have decent benefits I am fine with it. Fixating on what someone else makes will not help me earn more. Would I refuse a lawyer if needed because my pay would be supporting his "lavish" lifestyle. I don't think so unless I where a fool. As a stockholder It is good that you do not wish to partake in being represented this leaves more profit for dividends and investment as well as more money for those of represented to bargain for.
I have always been amazed at how union people don't (or choose not to) realize that those union "dues" they pay go right into the pockets of their leaders. A union is just as much of a greedy entity as the corporation. How about someone post how much union leadership makes?
I was gladly on strike for seven weeks with my brothers and sisters and never ever considered being a scab. How can I expect to look at myself or have my family look at me respect, how am I suppose to teach my son about morals and values when I don't even have any. No there was no chance I was going to disrespect myself, my family or my friends. There was never and never will be a benefit to being a scab. No amount of money in the world is worth the amount of dignity and respect that will be lost.
@iwzf I think those still thinking about their scabbiness or those that just recently sold their souls for 25 or so grand and have not yet made peace with the devil, sort of like a cheap wh--e after the first trick for her pimp. Eventually the area over where her soul was will crust over and she will learn to crave the attention of the johns and do the dirtiest of deeds with great pleasure. The only thing possibly more despicable than a scab is a child molester as they probably never had souls to begin with.

@gcu Wow, that is pretty raw. From a spouse's perspective - so glad that my Rifd husband was out of that mess. I hear of so many devastating head injuries from just a fall of ten feet or so and most of the time it is amateur ladder users. I actually was amazed when I saw on here that Verizon was sending people up on ladders like that. I guess I would be angrier with the company for risking people's lives under threat of a certain Rif if they refuse than trying to badger someone caught in the middle of a Union war. Other than the government, I don't know of any IT people that had an option of unionizing back in the eighties when we were getting hired in droves into new positions. When I had my first intern job with TRW, my Mom said if they ask you to join the Union just do it even though you are temporary. So a few days into my session I asked the other IT people if I should join the Union and they looked like dogs that had just been smacked with the newspaper for chewing the couch. They said "Don't say union or they will get rid of you". And that was the last I heard of Unions and IT the whole time I worked anywhere and that was only because I brought it up before I knew the dangers of even saying union. So I don't know how the 80's Yuppies could start a union if they are on the outside looking in just for saying the word union, most weren't trust fund babies that could mess up having a job like that. No one in my family or extended family had ever gone to college and it was the same for many of my classmates. We were expected to get a job and keep it. Union was the last thing on our minds, it was back before they started taking away pensions and all of that stuff. Well, that is the way it was in my Fly-over city anyhow.

What is your motive?
Well as a Union Member that was on strike protecting my job and career from the extremely greedy leadership of the company that I help build into a top fortune 500 company. I will say, I am so proud that I had the chance to stand up a fight with the 40,000 strong Union Brother and Sisters. We proved to a very misguided and failing leadership that we will not sacrifice our lives and those of our families for your greed and mismanagement.
For those of you who claim that you are proud or thankful for your role in this greedy misguided and mismanaged company. All I can say is.....you are on your own. Not me...I sure hope this entitled selfish greedy leadership takes care of you all by yourself as they do themselves. Good luck with that.
