Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Next round

So I'm hearing mid September we will have another round of layoffs. So I would like to hear some thoughts on the volunteer to go process, how it worked for those the last round etc. it just seems contradictory when you read the form.

Curious if those impacted in the Long Beach, CA Direct TV layoff are getting a severance payment and to what portion of a years base salary.

Those of us who were direct tv broadcast employees, in Long Beach, CA, at The California Broadcast Center are being systematically fired. - all, older workers with 20+ years with Direct tv. The term "laid off" means nothing. We are being let go - period. There are direct TV employees who've worked at the California Broadcast Center for 20 years who are being replaced by uneducated 'workers' that we've had to train. They're 1/2 our age, are making 1/2 our pay, they know nothing about broadcast technology, and are 'friends' of the incompetent manager of the facility who was brought in a couple of years ago to 'clean house'. No packages for us, no benefits, nothing. This is age discrimination, and in California — that's illegal. We all have degrees, have built this broadcast center from direct tv's first day of delivering satellite service and AT&T doesn't give a damn. It's a non-union filty and the young, stupid, arrogant punks they've hired cold care less.

The buzz is that this Monday some more details will be revealed concerning the upcoming surplus. No details if it's the Feb. 2015 EPO, severance or surplus approach. The push on the wireline / wireless is now to take front line customer interfacing service managers level 2 positions and move them into centralized Centers of Excellence. We all know what that leads to...offshoring to less expensive staff and ultimately to outsourced shops....

More info regarding surplus and unemployment- ALL show involuntary, no matter if you raised your hand or not. Therefore getting unemployment shouldn't be an issue in any state. When you get your term pay it states Invol surplus.' Or at least mine did and I volunteered on the first minute it was allowed.

In Texas, you are eligible for unemployment if you are laid off and not voluntarily.

Regardless your situaion Laid-Off Employees Required to Zip Lips on Way Out, must sign the general release & waver, This is a game of semantics. Sure, they're promising to keep "Their end of the bargain, for something you had already earned working for the company, all of you by free will, are giving your rights away, for 20k" Under the pretense of reorganization?, if look closely you will be replaced either by a newby, or by a foreigners who are brought in for the express purpose of displacing the American workers, don't you love this company.

I would caution the wording in your surplus docs, if you elect to be declared surplus, some states unemployment compensation does not apply when you volunteer to exit. Seek legal counsel in your state, in CA many people were denied unemployment compensation, at not fault of teir own, just for receiving a severance package

You will also receive unemoyment if you exit the payroll during a surplus. Whether you go voluntarily or otherwise.

Lump sum, the pension Average 4% annual return, you can do much better investing in other financial instruments, between my pension and 401K, had 850k, rolled over and wisely invested, and not n T 's control, makes sense to me

In response to "JcyasIo-1igp", did you take your pension as lump sum or annuity?

I volunteered and left in June. Timing was picture perfect as I had well over 30 years and was close to being ready to go. Got my dollars in a little over 40 days. I also have one hell of a pension and 401K which I rolled over. Had a great career and am happy to have moved on. Further, I can't see the company denying anyone who volunteers to go.

A winning strategy to get your package: "if you are a reliable contributor surrounded by low grade workers", shift your attitud and fade to mediacrity, your team won't be relying on you anymore, otherwise you’ll likely never be let go, notifying directly your manager so theirs not doubt they get the message,

Falling to the bottom 10% in performance requires: not being a team player, g. “Sorry, can’t stay late, gotta go!“, being out of sight, not feeling you’ve put in your best work, etc, in PCG/ ATO most people in our workgroup are mediocre, just as our innefective leadership team, becoming disliked is not exacltly what you wanted to do with your career, fortunately AT & T does not offer a such anymore, specially when you value yourself, and your abilities.

Yes, they are asking. I received it. But ther is no guarantee just because you volunteer you will be selected. So they say. One line says yes, I'm ready and willing to receive involuntary termination with severance benefits. But below w that it says there is no guarantee for the severance benefits. So I was just curious what you he thoughts are and how its handled.

A software company that outsources development - should explain everything about ATO haha - can it get any worse - Gutted and only left with Chuckle - Associate Director - processes from Call Centers they would like to manage employees with across the board, no worries that will be outsourced soon. DO we actually do anything except make excuses on the amount of work piled on. Expectations of Quality left the building a few years back.

Remember Enron, its great, were doing great - p--p There will be something left at the end, but not much after the Vultures have bought more companies to outsource the payroll and maximize profit. Selling real Estate, Divesting States wire-line service, Just a matter of time , End up like Quest. Bad Management Choices

Many would sign up immediately with a decent payout - ATT doesn't like the self nominating, no control, no pleasure in you leaving on your own, want to give you the ""talk" So Sorry

In ATO, the same thing is happening with STD or how now they are called associate directors and up. Majority are worthless, lying, cheating losers who have no respect for engineers. They tend to still all of our ideas and put their names on it. They come up with statements like "we are supposed to teach them how to be better managers" or "it is their job to keep our noses just above water" expecting that we work 24x7 while they keep banker hours. What a joke. When I started at AT&T wireless it was a fun place to work, now it is crap.

-Otv nailed it, I am in ATO, I don't ever recall having an Area manager worth of their title, mostly talkers, the ones that say," let e find out and I 'll get back with you later" ,for sure ZERO knowledge, BTW, one common denominator among them, mostly divorced women, int their 50's with low self confidence, bipolar , and boy the know howto kiss a--... To our leaders

It's surprising to me that AT&T can attract top talent any longer. Most of the top talent was laid off. AT&Google hasMt invented anything worthwhile in over 100 years. Sure they can copy everyone else or try to butilize that's all AT&The is now. Just a copy cat and not a good one.

Does the company even seek volunteers anymore? I figured they just chop, chop, chop. My leadership team told us that they're interested in "keeping people with skills". From everything I've read on this forum that's a load of bullsh*t! The company just established its first official automation task force. This is the beginning of the end for most of us.
