Being that this is a layoff board, serving laid off individuals, it's a safe bet that most people here are not union members.

I love the the retirement phone plan. T-Mobile is cheaper. Service is just as good or better. Who cares about the discount. They rape u on averages. Too many choices to worry about getting a discount when u retire. And the health care is a joke. But, as hr said. U asked for it. Lol.

You see, if you were Union and were facing the prospect of being laid off, it would be fought tooth and nail. Further, in a union environment, were a company successful in initiating a layoff, there would be zero arbitrariness to it that would leave one wondering why they were targeted. However the system, without a union, is very subjective - they don't like you, you're out. You don't brown nose - your out. You're older - you're out. You're paid too much, or have too much vacation - you're out. You slipped up once, after years of good reviews, you're out.

It's a fundamentally unfair system as opposed to the last in, first out one adhered to by unions. There are no games of playing favorites. Being the bosses lapdog and s---ing up doesn't increase your longevity. You don't get pushed out because you're a stand up guy/gal, or you make too much. You put in your time, you have your advocate during the journey and, when you're ready to leave and your pension seems reasonable, you leave of your own accord.

Would you go to court without a lawyer? Why go to work without one? Corporations have their's.

It's human nature to band together for mutual benefit. That's why towns and cities form. For mutual exponential gain. That's why nations form. That's why alliances form. That's why monopolies form. It's mirrored throughout the animal kingdom as well, because the simple concept of banding together gives individuals far more benefit than sticking it out alone ever could. It tilts the scale more in your favor, especially when the other side who can oppress you has far deeper pockets and political pull.

Only a masochist wishes harm upon oneself. Don't ever go it alone, if given the choice. Why do you think there's such adamant opposition from companies at the first rumor of a union-forming drive? Think about it.

Sure the union way is best. Who wouldn't want to become a sheep for the rest of their lives doing as they're told by the capos who don't give a rat about them except for the big bucks their union dues bring them. I am man enough to make my own way in the world, If Verizon boots me out the door, then I move on to the next place that needs what I have to offer. I am in charge of my success or failure. I will never give that up to a union or to a corporation. The rest of you can baa all the day long.

Have you figured out for sure you aren't eligible to be a retiree? There is a formula of age and years worked. Hubby qualified. The phone retirement benefit is good, the medical not so much. Try not to think about the unfairness, it's disturbing to think about what sort of people do that sort of thing to a fellow human.

I'm so sorry. I had 18 years too when I was RIF'd in 2015. All the people I was friends with that were impacted all had over 15 years in.

Sorry to hear about your job loss. As for the Union member's "I told you so" I would rather be begging at Grand Central Station than being associated with the laziest bunch of losers in the Northeast.
