I believe I'd rather leave on my own. Taking off the beloved golden handcuffs is becoming possible. Is there truly life after this place? The ship is sinking and I'm ready to row my own boat..Please share stories..

I meant to answer this earlier. I was laid off this year and I don't visit these boards much. I'm just being nosey LOL and wondering how all this ends up.
The answer is ABSOLUTELY!!! But you need to start NOW. Apply internally to satisfy your surplus agreement (if affected). But I would spend ALL of my time looking externally. And even working on getting your "mojo back". There's something about working for T that will make you feel defeated and dejected.. this impacts your ability to find work. Harness your inner Randy and get to SELLING ....YOU. hahaha..
No seriously. Find the things that set you apart from your peers and leverage that on your resume and all other professional social media outlets. And watch a few Fireside Chats and see how Randy really works the room (not kidding). Just bring SUBSTANCE to your STYLE.
Start to network and get engaged with networking circles. Towards the end (before my surplus) I felt like something was brewing. And I was also a top performer but told to sort of keep a low profile. Long story short, I'm making more money. And I enjoy what I do. Keep the faith. And work on getting your mojo back, because approaching a job search feeling down and deflated will affect your search.
The answer is yes , People talk far more in this forums that in the business world, always Continue to search diligently for a better work environment to switch to, and be sure to let others know that you are interested in new opportunities for work, when you can joyfully hand in your resignation letter and move on to bigger, better, and happier things.
After seeing some many of my accomplished Friends and coworkers discarded like garbage, I tested the waters, had 12 Interviews in a 3 monthnframe, had 4 offers all which were higher than my current Rate, and chose a great company, that provides great benefits, bi put most important "I feel valued"
I have yet to be effected by a surplus and it scares the hell out of me. I've heard some success stories but more horror stories. Your financial situation will certainly determine how well you transition between employers. Only those who have been with the company for a long time are entitled to the 6 months pay and they are usually in a much better position than those who are not eligible for this much. They say the best time to look for a job is when you still have one so if you're going to start seeking employment elsewhere do so now while the AT&T piggy is paying because soon Randy will have this company in even more debt causing it to slide down hill more aggressively than it is now.
