Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

You ARE eligible for unemployment even if you take a voluntary package. AT&T HR will lie to you and tell you you aren't eligible.

You CAN get unemployment even if you take a voluntary package. My wife's whole office was surplused in Texas after 17 years with the company. The HR bullshit artist working for the company told them that they weren't eligible for unemployment if they took the voluntary package. However, we did our homework and found that there IS a stipulation in the unemployment rules that's states YOU ARE eligible for unemployment even if you accept a voluntary package. If I remember correctly, you need to note in your application that you accepted the voluntary package "in lieu of unemployment". We literally found that stipulation on unemployments own website.

They volunteered for "involuntary" separation. It sounds contradictory, but sometimes legalese is like that. AT&T does not challenge those unemployment claims.

They offered voluntary packages, at first, and my wife took it. Then, a month later, they surplused the rest of the office. They offered the option to move with the work to San Antonio or Fort Worth, take a package or JOG until another positioned opened up, but that could also be a leveraged rep position. This is why my wife took the voluntary and still got the unemployment. Hope this clears up my initial post.

If the whole office surplused than apparently they're all being terminated right and would be eligible for unemployment.dont understand why they would be offer a Volunteer package . TEXAS is a little strange though and labor cheap ,yeah they don't make things clear most of the times , i received Unemployment due to office closure in CA there was no need to volunteer to leave. Also received my termination pay.

True. No doubt about it. I volunteered in June of this year and had zero trouble getting unemployment. I did have to wait until I received the severance pay but I got it.

Here's more information. The magical term may be "in lieu of notice". http://www.uwlaw.com/unemployment-claims-in-cases-where-you-have-given-a-severance-package/
