Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Not Sure

So we all knew this was coming and will be continuing. The one problem I have... is telling people they are in an affected group but then choose to hold that information for another 30-60 days. That's what makes everyone sour and uptight. It's the not knowing. I can't understand why they just don't tell you one way or the other. It's like a cruel torture game to them. Either that or they are hoping you will jump ship. Once you've gone through it year after year, quarter after quarter you do get a little immune to it. But not completely unless you don't need a job to pay your bills.

Crux of it cont.

  • Don't bother with an age discrimination suit. They are casting a wide net with these cuts. Age means nothing, performance ratings will be worth next to nothing and your bosses opinion is moot. Bean counters are ruling this exercise. You'll spend far more to litigate than to accept a package and go. I've seen it personally and it's not worth the cost, stress, anxiety and loss of self esteem. They have us by the short and curleys and they know it.

  • Look at the number of execs that are all retiring by year end. Believe it or not, this is telling. They're getting their while they can. I think I will follow their lead.

  • Finally, in today's corporate climate, we are an asset, not a person or even a contributor. We are a commodity to be bought and sold like cattle. Sad but true. Take your skills and make them work for you. Find your muse because being a wh--e for the dollar only goes so far.

Here is the crux of it folks. I've been around a long time and I've seen this movie, the only difference is the plot is somewhat changed.

  • Company has said publicly that 30% of US staff will go by 2020. That effects everyone. Do the math - that will be somewhere between 25 and 40K (conservatively) that will be off payroll (I suspect) by year end 2018.

  • Share holder value; fat exec paychecks and golden parachutes; and Wall Street! T stock was downgraded to "intense sell" today. This is not good and the media hasn't even gotten their hands on the numbers leaving yet.

  • Stephenson and Donovan have said publicly that we are on the hook to learn on our own time and expense - work/life balance is lie. WF2020 training is thin at best and is being used to cull the herd based on completion and compliance. If you're behind, you're already on "the list".

  • Code words: Efficiency and Employee cost = staff reductions. It will accelerate between now and the end of 2018 (2019 will be the last of the few that are left).

  • Bratislava, Hyderabad and Mexico will grow in numbers, domestic staff will leave either through attrition or layoff. (Demographics are on their side - they said it themselves (Randall and John).

Writing is on the wall folks. Not to be a doom and gloomer, but unless you're young, cheap and (all due respect) offshore, you have a target on your back and the environment will continue to get more toxic and driven by nonsensical administrative hoops.

Good luck to everyone... we're gonna need it.

Get as much in writing as possible that supports your case.

I wager a class action lawsuit would get their attention.

The company wants everyone to think it is their problem as an individual, even their own shortcomings, but in fact it is an attack on older people who have worked for many years and are maybe paid more than the company wants to continue paying. But of course if you were getting $1 per hour they would be looking to dump you so they could pay someone else 50 cents.

If they hired a younger person for the same position you currently hold, than you might have a case. Check with a labor attorney.

Well, they hired a young person and I am a middle aged man. They want me to take the severance, I think I can sue for age discrimination. Any advise ?

How is this and the other information about retail cuts not going to sabotage the holiday sales, when the smiling sales person and knowledgeable support is most important?

These are really horrible, insensitive people running this company.

I think it is always their plan to shake the tree and see who quits voluntarily. If enough quit - problem solved and no severance packages. Of course, it's usually the strong swimmers who jump from a sinking boat. Add to this the complexity of having a ton of contractors and and ton of those being foreign workers. What a mess. I really don't like how secretive it all is. Just come out and tell people. We get that times are changing. There are other jobs out there. Our careers are just foam and bubbles on a vast sea of uncertainty at AT&T.
