Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Classic Verizon decision making.

We can't send out two technicians to do a job that's in an unsafe area or to help expedite a job that will take an entire day or two for just one technician. We can however send out two or three managers to do a "job inspection." Keep in mind that none of these managers have a clue how to do the job and they're pulling down a combined $200k - $400k annually depending on the group. Time to start trimming the fat from the VP level down to first levels. I guarantee you the business would run a whole lot smoother without them. Don't worry, I promise to put my cones out when you're gone.

The remaining VZB'ers are the upper-echelon of AK'ers and scabbies. They'll never be able to wash those curry stain off their lips. And a good portion of them will be gone again after the upcoming RIF.

"This company has changed ,it's the old gte way of managing, manage by intimidation and fear like your in the medevil times, the top try to run this place with an iron fist"

You moron. You know nothing of GTE. And, since you haven't yet figured things out, VZB is running the network show now. Yes, that's right - MCI / Worldcom.

This company has changed ,it's the old gte way of managing, manage by intimidation and fear like your in the medevil times, the top try to run this place with an iron fist, that what they try to do,you got vp' sand upper level guys that walk around with a chip on their shoulder and they talk to their employees like they are tough guys in the street ,like really come on ,only reason we lower managers does say anything is cause we all need a pay check, but it's a sad state that this was once a great company to work for at one time. We are a successful business at one tine and we still are ,but we have become arrogant, and arrogance leads to failure and that's what I see happening to this company and my peers see it also, but we cannot say anything for fear of being rif'd or fired just because cause this is the the old gte at the helm of this company,I have time and will be leaving very soon ,I just say it's very sad to see how such a successful company treats their employees, just remember your employees are your customers also ,but I only see a long road to failure coming from this place.

Good post. I'm on my 28th year and can't believe what this company has become. A disgrace on so many levels. The manipulation of unrealistic, pulled out of your a-- productivity numbers takes up almost as much time as actual telecom work. I'd say 80% of management is useless. And half of the rest deserve a kick in the balls just for not pushing back at incompetent leadership. I know, they'd probably lose a job. F--- Ivan.

All of us have a need to participate, engage, feel appreciated, and gain the skills we need to become more marketable. If there is a desire, and we know beyond a doubt, to get rid of many of us, to have a target, and to be treated like criminals, then the best thing to do is give us the opportunities to be successful, to be able to go to interviews without the helm of overwhelming self-doubt and guilt but instead to go with confidence of being a good employee. Despite Verizon's efforts to turn its culture around, deep influences of ostracism, bullying, and unfair treatment abound that borders on being against the law and are definite examples of poor management. You who target, who give preferential treatment to newer employees or who attempt to bring our spirits down, you know who you are and you are not living up to the credo, which has its merits. Remember, employees are stakeholders in this and we should be a part of the team not in spite of it.

Just sell the wireline and get rid of the over paid clerk that Verizon calls managers and get rid of the 2nd and 3rd level ,they are overpaid and all they do is look to make everyone miserable and make a workplace of stress, that's the GTE culture and that is what runs this company ,let's keep buying all these sh--ty companies to acquire the future of Internet which this company has no clue, let's just acquire more debt FROM 2009 45 billion to today 176 billion in debt lets just go for 200 billion by the end of the year and let's just bankrupt this place then we can dissolve the union and overpaid managers from the highest level to the lower now downsize and hiring all new managers replace them with the new generation and pay then half with no benefits....

@pqp

Again a manager living in his dream world. It's all about I'm the manager you're the tech, I know more than you. Instead of working together for a goal we point out every little thing, just to say gotcha. Read a management book and learn the proper style, then you can motivate people.

@1qmy True, I'm find myself constantly telling the customer no. and that all stems from fear of discipline for the smallest infraction, or for not fast enough, because you were trying to do the job the way the customer would be delighted with Verizon. You are forced to do a sh--ty job, and not what the customer really wants. it's horrible.

Then the kicker is they (The do nothing managers) go back on that sh--ty job to do a quality, and discipline you for not doing a better sh--y job, you just can't win.

the place s---s.

Very simple........If you treat your staff like children....they tend to behave like children, and that's not out of spite, it's the management style. The tech is not going to make any decision on his own for fear of discipline. The tech is literally programmed not to deviate one inch. Do you know who loses big time then.......The Customer. They have a child in there home, not an adult.

@djt....$44 - $48 an hour? Smoke another one. By the way, we're still fixing all of your mistakes from the ewa and there are ZERO managers who were ever fiber techs. Get your resume together. Don't forget to include that you're a glorified office manager who fixes time sheets and approves timecards.

They are idiots, you could do everything right and they will find the dumbest thing to show you they know something. Ladder hooks, loose item in cab, not enough cones, wheel chock, it never ends instead of saying looks good and move on, they must try to manage.

This is because it's all about decreasing liability when you morons are out on the road and worksite. If we didn't followup on you guys, you wouldn't do half the crap you do and before you know it, we're settling several multi-million dollar lawsuits because a ladder fell off a truck or some old lady ran into your truck that she didn't see.

@djt....Thank you for your post. Many of us worked in these so-called unsafe places by ourselves during EWA and had zero problems. It's another excuse on the laziness we saw in the lack of workmanship in the field. Yes many deserve to be canned.

They have no ability to motivate, it all went down hill when they took whatever they could get to manage.

"We can't send out two technicians to do a job that's in an unsafe area or to help expedite a job that will take an entire day or two for just one technician."

  • That's because you are even more unproductive when you are in teams, and ALL area's the union have agreed to mark as "unsafe" get two techs. Most likely the area you refer to is not "2 man area" or you are lying about where you are.

"Keep in mind that none of these managers have a clue how to do the job and they're pulling down a combined $200k - $400k annually depending on the group"

  • 90% of the 1st levels and most of the 2nd levels are former techs so your comment holds no water for the most part. Yes, there are managers that have never set foot in a hole but they don't last we know that. $200-$400k huh? Let's do the math

Tech pay: $44-48 an hour x 2080 hours = 91,520 per year at the lowest scale. Add on the OT that everyone has available and again......your comment holds no water. And don't give me the "you can't count overtime cause it's not always there".......yes it is. Don't kid yourself

"Time to start trimming the fat from the VP level down to first levels. I guarantee you the business would run a whole lot smoother without them"

  • I agree with this completely, but we also need to trim the fat at the tech level too, we do those inspections so we can have something against you when you get caught not doing your job and we process you for your pink slip. Sure its a fight, but people get fired. Just depends on how hard the manager wants you out. I've terminated at least 2 people who just didn't want to work. That's fine, we got you.

"Don't worry, I promise to put my cones out when you're gone."

  • By all means, don't! You think because we left there isn't safety/security/another manager checking later on? We got you
