Today I saw a classic example of drinking the company "kook aid" of AT&T. A co worker decided to shift his days off because another person in his group was taking the same days off. The co worker stated "that should make the boss happy". His thinking is keep management happy and don't make waves and you will keep your job longer.

You have to decide how you want to support yourself and family and with what type of lifestyle you want. Do you want to work for someone or work for yourself? In the corporate world you have to have a certain amount of interpersonal skills or you will eventually find out that they will find ways to get rid of you in legal or sometimes illegal ways. you have to be PC for the sake of your survival. The moment you decide to standup and say something your branded and when the work slows down, laid off. The company is downsizing right now. They have been under extreme pressure to compete with many more companies since the telecommunications act of 1996 forced the RBOC's to allow the long distance companies to bundle service. This has resulted in 20 years of constant change. I was not a kiss assso I had to ride wave having 7 title changes, 8 work locations and being outsourced or laid off 4 times! I was able to apply for jobs within the company and always was able to find another job until this last surplus. Looking back I had to through some BS to raise my family for sure. But, that's what a man has to do right? On to the next adventure...
I'm suspicious this guy was in Connecticut. I wont say his name but sounds like someone I knew and yes all that's left are the jerks in some jobs.
In my 37 years I only had two bosses that were what I would consider honorable and competent.
One would tell us to do the job and if we had issues call one of the other people in the group for help. this was not a negative but a way of showing we were working together and will help each other. If we had to take the wife or kids to the doctor, or go to a school play he would say go and have one of the other folks cover if it could not wait. when we were evaluated he would not allow his people to be down rated just to fill a quota. His boss told him he would have to take the rating cut if he felt that way. His response as we found out from another manager was " no problem" His 3rd liner could not figure out why he could not get any of this managers people to talk bad about him. Other managers who needed someone at night had problems getting people to answer the phone. This manager could call anyone and his people would ask where they were needed no matter the time or day, even if on vacation.
Our only problem is he retired last year to save a job for a younger guy in the department.
We need more like him but it sounds like all that's left in some areas are the suck asses.
Funny, my current Area Manager would not find a comparable job anywhere in the solar system, Why is she still employed?A: (K.A.)

Real men don't kiss ass...put your purse down please!....the ones at AT&T that do it every day are pathetic......they think it will move them up in the company.....but AT&T will turn on you on a second!!!
I love the previous comment. Right on the money. If you want to be a slimy SOB than AT&T will be a great home for you.
At AT&T I truly believe that management Does not have anything to offer, in my 20+ Years with the company, only 2 supervisor were worthy of my time, the other 18 had nothing to offer that will interest the people in our teams or that matter in our lifes, However, there is one thing that you can still do: all it requires is a fundamental shift in your attitude and everything honorable that you once stood for. If you're ready for this big change, the art of kissing asscan grow on you like slime mold on a toilet sink. Once perfected, it will open new avenues of opportunity that you never knew existed. However, you have been warned - adopting these soul-less methods will degrade you in your own eyes so much that even when you get to where you wanted, you will not like the final turn-out of events. Moreover, you won't be able to look most people straight in the eye and will have made more enemies than friends, how manupy friends you really have? you will find out one way or another, it is just another day at AT&T
