NLRB Alleges Strong-arm Tactics in Use

Seeks to curb Verizon pickets

The National Labor Relations Board is seeking a court order to stop striking Verizon union workers from picketing and using alleged strong-arm tactics at area hotels housing Verizon employees and subcontractors amid a work stoppage over contract negotiations now in their sixth week.

The NLRB is seeking a temporary restraining order to stop nine International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers locals from picketing at hotels in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, including Motel 6 in Danvers, Extended Stay America in Westboro and a Days Inn in Middleboro.

The union locals’ “confrontational” and “highly disruptive” picketing has included allegedly shouting to hotel guests that they were staying with “scabs” at bedbug-infested hotels; blocking hotel entrances, threatening and yelling obscenities at hotel workers; assaulting a Verizon subcontractor; damaging car tires; and using air horns that woke up guests, according to NLRB court documents filed yesterday in U.S. District Court in Boston, which include witness testimonies and photographic evidence.

The NLRB is seeking the restraining order on grounds that the picketers are violating the National Labor Relations Act by posing a “serious threat” to the free flow of commerce by pressuring the hotels from doing business with Verizon. Verizon filed a charge against the union locals with the NLRB on May 11.

The IBEW locals’ attorney, the national IBEW office and NLRB did not respond to Herald inquiries.

Myles Calvey, business manager of IBEW Local 2222 in Dorchester, which is named in the court case, said he saw no evidence of members using strong-arm tactics during pickets at the hotels, which he maintained were used as Verizon dispatch centers.

“It’s been pretty low-key,” Calvey said. “There’s been no craziness. We have been respectful as we can be.”

A New York judge granted a temporary restraining order against the Communication Workers of America on May 9 after its striking Verizon union members allegedly engaged in a similar campaign at hotels in New York.

“These acts have been aimed at harassing and driving out of these hotels Verizon managers, other replacement workers and other hotel guests having nothing whatsoever to do with the current labor dispute,” Verizon general counsel Amy Seifer said. “These businesses and the customers they serve should be free from the IBEW’s blatantly unlawful coercion.”

Anyone have a retort to the Fact that Verizon is using the Hotel Parking lots as a Stocking Facility for the employees of Verizon while they are on the "Clock"? Didn't think so.. The Union is 100% in their right to picket at these locations as long as Verizon has On the Clock Employees stocking and working. Verizon is using the parking lots and private property of other business to conduct business that is always done on verizon property.. Maybe VZ can buy off more local judges, or you can accept the Fact that VZ is trying to be sneaky and not forthright?

@oqp. Hmmm I struck a nerve. Maybe you're getting a little worried that I caught the subtle references to what goes on behind closed doors in the union homes.

@xhz Mommy really don't give a rats asswhat you think. Just get back down in that manhole and do the best you can. Mommy knows that's not much but mommy already has very low expectations of you wittle Scabbys. One day with lots of help and extreme luck you might be big and strong like Mr Union Man probably not but Mommy is ever hopeful. Mommy wishes your backbone of jelly may one day harden enough that you may stand on your own. Mommy has many kisses to go around if you need one.

@lfz. Maybe it's normal in union households for mommy's and daddy's to lick their kinds hiney's, but for the rest of the world that's pretty disgusting. Once again you've proven how pathetic the union members are with this post. I think social services needs to do a well-child checkup on your kids.

Hahahahaha the comments on here from the union monkeys crack me up. They talk about backbone, while they are letting their kids go uninsured and their family go broke. Way to be a man you pansy. I hope social services takes away every kid in the union households before they get poisoned by the union mentality. Stop the picket monkey DNA line right where it is. Last thing the world needs is more lazy selfish helpless mindless idiots being brought into the world for the rest of us to have to take care of.

More ignorant ranting and taunting by the union elite… typical.

you guys still don’t get that this thread is not about EWA vs Union, do you? This is about the union interfering with the lives and businesses totally unrelated to Verizon.

brain dead monkey's indeed

This is what disgusts me about the union. They don't care who gets hassled while they throw their little schoolboy fits. They have a total disregard for anyone other than their own little rabid pack of animals. Filthy, disgusting animals.

You really are brain dead monkeys, aren’t you? You’re not just irritating the EWA’s…. You’re disrupting the lives of people totally uninvolved with your little tantrum… People travelling for non-Verizon business, bereavement, and vacations. Please make sure that you wear CWA shirts and wave your signs so everybody knows who’s responsible.

Well they are using the parking lots to stock vehicles. Not just a place to sleep at. That makes it a company work zone. Picket away.
