Thread regarding AT&T Inc. layoffs

Hiring

My location did not see any layoffs. Truth is they are hiring and interviewing thru the week. we have a new class training as well. I am sad for those that were laid off though. I am in the SE region.

Sadly too many drink the Kool Aid and listen to the corporate hype. ATT wants to be down to around 120k employees by 2020 and that INCLUDES all the other countries. SO how many do you really think will be in the US. Verizon had 235k employees in the US 9 years ago. today they have 177k employees worldwide.

They have an estimated 70k employees left in the US.

See a pattern?

Seriously, if anyone at the call centers thinks hiring means they are safe, think again. Don't be naive. Plan NOW for later when those jobs disappear.

As far back as 2013 there has been detailed information in APEX regarding the timeline for Randall's "unimaginable change" for 2020. Numbers of employees needed in departments like GNAC, GNOC, RNSC,.... and how they will be used. For the customer, the order/repair process includes a series of six 'milestones' that are void of human interaction. An "order manager" is available in cases where late stage process fails occur. Test results of the new process and the turn down dates of the legacy order process, number of employees needed to perform in the system and the labor cost savings, yada, yada... it's all there and has been for some time. Also read some of the discussions between managers on ATT's social sites. They discuss meeting details while patting each other on the back. It is too easy to find out if your function is long for this world. The company is guilt free and unapologetic for what you see. I've been a bystander to the elimination of hundreds of customer collections, support, legacy tech, mobility tech, support specialists, distribution, real estate, engineering employees etc., and I've learned that to think that any position beyond Randall's food tester is safe- is folly.

As others have warned, please don't get caught up this false sense of security. Stay on guard. Come up with your plan a, b and even c. Remain cautiously optimistic.

80-20 rule. Plan is to have 80% outsourced and only 20% internal for call centers. Tech support is going to be the main internal centers left. If you provide billing/account support you can expect to be outsourced or replaced by self-service options, this is a current project. Centers close each year and it's only covered by local news. ATT does not need internal CSRs, don't get caught up in that thought.

I happen to not believe they will close the call centers, especially the ones that are hiring now and training employees. AT&T need CSR even if they are outsourcing, because the outsourced employees really do not care about the company because they do not receive the benefits we do. We will be around for a long time. Layoffs were mgmt only. CSR layoffs will come next quarter don't let hiring fool you.

My location is hiring too but still laid off 10 managers. The majority of call center cuts were non union managers and support staff.
