Lowell Talks Strike Today

Well know where all this derp, derp, yay v-team stuff is coming from now. The head of the snake! He says it's going to be a 3 month strike.

VZ CEO at today's J.P Morgan Media, Technology and Telecom Conference

Lowell McAdam

Yes. So we have been out on strike now for 42 days. Those of you that were probably greeted on the way in this morning by a few cheers or encouraging us we are under a bit of a gag order now so I can’t say a lot about negotiations. I just will say that the Secretary of Labor, Tom Perez has been very helpful in the process, so we do appreciate that. The impact of the strike is probably what people are most interested in here.

Our goals are to get our costs a bit more in line, we are obviously more expensive from a wage and benefit than our competitors are, but we also realize we can’t change this overnight for our employees is not fair to them, so we’re trying to get that a bit more in line. We need to have a lot more flexibility if you’re coming in and building up a force to build Boston you need to have the ability to move that force around, so of course flexibility is the other major issue for us.

As far as impact to the Company’s bottom line, the way I think about it is the first three months of the strike you’re doing a lot of training of new people to temporary workers to do the work and so your costs are up from a pure cash perspective because you’re not paying the wages and you’re somewhat offsets, so cash is relatively neutral.

The second three months of the strike is where your productivity goes up and we’re actually well ahead of that. Our managers are doing a super job out there, they’re covering the installation and repair load all of our call center activities are frankly running as well are better than they do normally. We have pushed off installations or doing a lot of installations, but we’re not doing the same volume that we have before.

So we won’t be driving similar numbers in second quarter that we would in first from an installation perspective. So the overall impact just depends on how we come out of the contract because we will get some concessions and then how long it goes. So when it’s done we will make sure to communicate with our investors about what the overall net-net impacts are.

Totally and utterly disagree with the improved productivity. Just search social media, compare the comments from before April 13 to the last couple of months. Furthermore, much of that work is in other countries. Lowell is just being deceptive again. Of course, in his earlier remarks he claimed there was no offshored work. And when he was corrected he said, "you can be insightful about that.." but I run a company with too many employees to keep track of. For a major company, for one of the key issues, and he doesn't know? He's getting paid how much for that level of incompetence.

6 months or more? Guess Lowell just flat out lied to Perez when they agreed time was of the essence in solving this strike. Right? Get a life troll.

Lowell talks a big game. That's his job as CEO, to convince everyone he knows what he's doing. Anyone who buys this line of BS is dumber than he his.

Verizon is losing customers every day. Where is Lowell getting his information anyway? Just do some searches on social media and you can see that people just loathe Verizon. The brand is rubbish at this point. "Very-Greedy" or "Ver-Lie-zon."

The last strike it was quite different, and he seems to be stuck in that world where people believed in the magic of wireless and the redundancy of the union. This was before Occupy Wall Street and all the news stories about the rich getting richer and the rest of us getting stomped on. Since the last strike, social media networks have strengthened and made it possible to get the word out.

Yes, even when mainstream media remains mysteriously silent on the union's side of this story, there is an entire network of people who know what's going on and THEY HATE THIS COMPANY. They hate it because it has become a symbol of corporate greed. Who are "they?" The millenials and other people who live online and on their devices. The very people Verizon should be courting. They might as well be on another planet, as far as this CEO is concerned!

Go on, EWAs and scabs, keep trying. Your best efforts will be for nothing though, since the FUTURE is lost. After all that talk of how wireline is such a drag and wireless is everything, watch as the entire business goes down the toilet.

RIP, VERIZON...

It is entirely true. Do a search for

Lowell's remarks at this morning's 44th annual JPMORGAN Technology, Media and Telecom conference in Boston. The OP's excerpt is pulled from the transcript.

I read the transcript at the Seeking Alpha website but to read the whole thing you need to register an email address.

If Lowell had, in fact, claimed strike projection of 6 mos, it would have been reported in the financial press by now. Sub par trolling at work.

Lowell publicly stated that while costs are up during the strike, he also said that overall cash outlay during the strike is "relatively neutral" due to offsets of not paying union wages and benefits. I hope the union has enough saved for the long haul because this is going to be a long one.

Such BS. He has to address the EWA's. What he didn't address is why most of their jobs are up in vacancy postings. EWA's, check to see if your job is posted.

Now, let's talk costs. All the rave about all the overtime the 19000+ EWA's are getting and how they're buying new cars...ect. Well, when conservatively rounded out,The EWA's costs twice as much as the in place work force of 37000+. Throw in the loss of brand name and image and it gets ugly. For those with MBA's, and you know who you are....the youtube stars... that twice the cost for half the bodies.

Tmobile a $40 dollar stock, really? haha It is all about churn and lowell knows this.

Factor in states like NY picking up unemployment tab and look out! PSE.....heavy regulation.... and payback.

Verizon is already in trouble for the last frontier deal. Check for yourselves.

Lowell created a sh-- storm, but what would you expect from a guy that buys up old failing companies that eventually end up failing anyway.

Stock will plummet into the thirties if this goes on longer. Tmobile, ATT, sprint all see that Verizon's jugular is exposed and the are packaging plans to take advantage of Verizon brand image troubles.

Lowell- "....we want to be google.....apple.....ect" You haven't a clue. Your team is too old and too stupid to compete with the likes of them.

All those who think Lowell is about to cave need to rethink that belief. He's fully invested in winning this thing.

Of course he has to say it will last 6 months or more. He wants to show that the company is okay with replacements long term. Just part of negotiations.

Reading the full transcript of his remarks from this morning. He really did talk about the strike lasting 6 months. He's fully dug in now.

Maybe the craft employees aren't that much of an asset after all.

Lowell delivered a "no big deal" message about the strike...anything else would've been detrimental to the Company's position in the negotiation. He did a disservice to the analysts though, by glossing over the financial impacts and reduced quality of customer experience. Accelerating the erosion of wireline revenues and increasing its costs, while having negative influences put on wireless spells trouble for the balance of FY16. Comparing balance sheets, T is in far better shape.

Lowell and Fran have added a staggering amount of debt while declining revenues and net profits. Their big come bets on wireless-enabled technologies and associated applications are getting hammered by evolving competing technologies. Settle the strike now, continue your harvest of the wireline business, and for once try viewing your craft employees as a valuable asset instead of as a liability.

Yeah he definitely isn't saying 3 months. He is acting like this will go until end of 2016.

He doesn't say it's going to be a 3 month strike. In fact, he makes no predictions for how long it's going to last.

I do find it interesting that he suggests the call center activity has actually improved with the replacement workers. I'm not surprised that it has, but I'm surprised he admitted it. Anyone who has called in for support as a consumer knows that the regular call center people regularly hang up on angry clients or transfer clients simply to get rid of them. Management employees are more likely to hold a customer's hand throughout the process and take responsibility for making sure the customer's needs are taken care of.

The field techs who are on strike have a somewhat technical job, and it's very difficult to replace their experience and know-how. But the call center people are doing jobs that can easily be replaced and improved upon, and this is being proven by the current performance of the call centers.
