What did these scabs do before Verizon hired them for this temp assignment? Seems odd these people can just up and leave wherever they came from and not lose the jobs they had before this assignment?

I would go for it if I didn't already have a great job. Union is stupid for staying away after they figured out this strike isn't getting them anywhere. They don't deserve the jobs they walked away from. The thousands of people who want to work have every right in the world to take the jobs the union obviously doesn't want.
You guys have it all wrong. They're merely warm bodies that float from strike to strike sucking up cash just like in the old days of labor disputes. This week they're a telecom worker, next week they could be in a factory, the week after that they could be fixing planes. It changes over time but the fact remains that they don't have any of these skills.
Maybe they are among the thousands of surplused members from the last 7 yrs. Im sure they could give 2 sh--s about the union or the company. Remember, their jobs weren't worth fighting for, only yours.
Many of them are "Fake It 'Til You Make It" people. Answer an ad, say you know how to do everything the interviewer asks about, then collect 2 or 3 big checks until you get exposed as a fake. Drive away with a few thousand dollars, rinse and repeat.

Non-union people who are on temporary assignments does not have a choice whether they want to go or not. Just like all you lazy union people are trying to feed your families, non-union people are trying to do the same. Get a job at Walmart stocking shelves, and then make another post.

So essentially former techs from other companies that did away with the job or got rid of their union or whatever. Most likely these people were in a union back in their tech days. And. They don't seem to have a problem crossing the holy picket line. Very soon I think the people screaming about this being immoral (ha) and un American will be scurrying around doing the same thing -trying to make a living to support themselves and their families.
$4840 gross a week will get people to come out. Scabs are not taking any ones job. Everybody knows that when all the back-door dealings are done the union boys will go back to work and the union will make it sound like they got them the best deal possible no matter what they give.

Anyone on here defending a Scab is "simply" Un-American. No one walks away from their job...they are fighting for their jobs! The company is looking to eliminate them from their jobs. A Scab will join that fight with the company to eliminate you.
99% of the world works on the "free-agent" market. So I agree with the poster below. If someone doesn't want the job, even temporarily, there's nothing wrong with someone else coming in and picking it up. There's work to be done, someone will pay for it, and that's it. There's nothing immoral about it.
The union contract has been expired for closing in on a year now. I didn't take your job, I agreed to a contract for work that was up for contract. I have 18 yrs experience in the field and was 'laid off' from Qwest when they sold off part of their business in the CenturyLink deal along with the entire garage of techs that I worked with. Since then I've taken whatever odd jobs I could get my hands on knowing full well that another full time job in the landline business was not coming back due to changes in technology. I have the opportunity to use my experience to make some very good quick cash, and I don't feel bad about it for a second.

Why is wrong? They have no ties to you. They don't owe your union anything. How can you fault someone for stepping in and taking the job you chose to walk out on so they could put food on their table?

Also, some folks see an opportunity to provide for their family, like a good family person does. Sometimes family is more important than someone else's cause.

Ifr and ypp, I think most of the guys coming in are from areas of the country where unions are pretty much nonexistent. So, crossing the so-called line is not that big of a deal to them. The cash is though.

Anyone that has the mind set to cross a union picket line for temporary work, is one desperate person that is never to be trusted. So get it out of your head that your getting anything more than the bottom of the barrel. Believe me, and you will see this to be true.
There are many contractors who do this work on a regular basis. For example Union employees are not allowed to work in the Basking Ridge HQ...who do you think does all that work?

They smoked crack....they did time in prisons....they stole from loved one's to buy drugs...the usual things a guy with no job, and ready for strike duty quick temporary cash does.
They work full time for smaller companies that Vz partners with. Vz hires the company via statement of work agreement and the workers are sent out to the job. Same concept as Vz's Professional Services/IT Consulting division.

That one's easy to answer, money. When someone comes along and offers to double your current rate of pay, it's not hard to see why a lot of guys will take it.
some already own contracting firms, and are essentially taking on a long-term contract, some are retired telco workers willing to come back for good cash, some are (as the person replied) out of work oil workers and out of work auto workers who are interested in making cash to support their families like responsible adults.
some may be ex-oil workers who have been hit pretty hard in the South ?
