Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What is going on?

The company and the union have been meeting with the DOL for over a week now. With this information blackout, no one knows what progress or non-progress is being made. It sure is an uneasy feeling since so many lives are affected by this strike. I am sure the EWA people want to go home and union people want to go back to work and bring this strike and backlog of work to an end. How much longer should this go on?

I had a English literature teacher in my senior year in high school in 1974. Mr. Kerrigan was nothing short of a genius. In our last class of the year he sat on the edge of his desk and lite up a cigarette, yes the teachers were allowed to smoke in those days. He proceeded to tell us about the computer revolution that was going to take hold of the world and the fiber optically connected global network that would allow information to spread throughout the world at the speed of light. He also went on to tell us that due to this fact it would bring the end to the United States as we knew it. He said that the US would be gone in 50 years. That brings us to 2024. So all this dismantling of the middle class is just a symptom of the impending doom that awaits us. In my 60 years on this planet, I have only seen this country spiral downward culturally and morally. Yes we have more "things" but we have lost common sense, common courtesy and the true American culture that made us great. So be prepared for the next 8 years to be more of the same with the final result being the loss of our way of life. Very very sad state of affairs in this once great nation and it looks like Mr. Kerrigan was spot on. He is since gone but was truly a visionary.

wxp - not propaganda....I am not taking sides at all, just presenting things as they appear to be. None of us who are outside that DC meeting room know the 100% truth, but there are crumbs of evidence around and piecing them together might help us all make the best decisions going forward. In the end, I actually hope you guys get an arrangement you can live with. On my end, I am assuming Ill be on EWA for another ~4 weeks, then will rotate off to a partial schedule, and Ive made peace with that. Ill be honest in that I don't like it, but Im OK with it (as I like my BAU job, so this bump in the road is worth riding through).

Best of luck to everyone on this.

Guys,

Both sides are on a gag agreement (not by a Judge, so order, but agreed to)

Anything on this board is speculation at best.

I know somebody, who knows someone, who's sister works for some, that blah blah blah.

I hope everything gets resolved soon. I understand that the job security is the main issue and worth fighting for.

I am a non-EWA IT guy.

GLTA.

Hope it all ends soon.

"Just get 5 sub companies in each area and be done with it ...."

That's already happened....except its more than 5 "subcompanies"....a lot more than 5.

Unfortunately, as others have posted here, the writing is on the wall and its just a matter of time until the company could care less if the union comes back or not. The DC meetings are simply buying more time for the plan to progress. Many has posited that by the end of June the plan will be at such a stage that EWAs can start going back to BAU jobs. IMO, that will be true in many areas, but it may take another month or so after that for all bases in the field to be adequately covered. FiOS is priority one on this effort it seems, and that workforce is darn near fully replaced already. In another few weeks the FiOS installs/repairs will beat very close to BAU levels and the summer will be spent catching up with the backlog created in the first 4-6 weeks. The company will just throw money at the backlog (i.e. hire more contractors) in proportion to how quickly they want the backlog issue solved. Of course, there is a financial balance to this and there are plenty of accountants on hand to figure it out.

I think this means that the union is stuck unless they take the deal on the table. As a bit of pure conjecture, I actually think that VZ will be upset if they take the deal....the offer was made hoping it wouldn't be accepted as it makes the task of replacing the work force easier (and in the end legal...and the union walked right into it). I think that's why we will never see a lockout per se, simply a slow fading away of the old workforce while "negotiations" continue until one side simply gives up. It will be the side with more resolve and more $.

I can tell you exactly what is going on. The company is adding more and more contractors every day. By the end of July the EWAS will go home and will be back to business as usual at Verizon. By this time next year the CWA will be nothing more than a bad memory at Verizon.

You could try this board for more serious discussion and less nonsense.

Negotiating in good faith doesn't mean giving in to demands. Vz has obviously hit their wall on how far they will go. They will do everything by the book legally but they are absolutely moving full speed ahead to replace Union work force. They have no choice at this point because customers have to be taken care of and its going on 2 months now.

If the union does not accept the contract as is, the union workers will be replaced. Keep in mind that the wireline side of the company is only responsible for 7% of the companies overall profit! The company is only willing to keep the union workers on their terms or it isn't worth to them. Cost of present wages and benefits cancel the 7% profit it produces. Unfortunately it comes down to money as always. Very sad situation.

Neither does yours. They are required to negotiate in good faith. The mediator is there to monitor that they are. You can't pretend to negotiate so you can be sure that the lbfo will be negotiated.

"The company is required to bargain in good faith even during an economic strike. Some could say that they have no plans to negotiate in DC but are only there as a measure to defend themselves from the Labor lawsuit that would come if the company is to move forward with breaking the union. "

This makes no sense. How can they defend against a lawsuit if they are not negotiating? Get over the thought that the company will not move.

I hope this is not the case as I am sick of EWA but I wouldn't put it past these exec's.

OGI, your post makes no sense, if the company has no plans on bringing back the union workforce, why are they still bargaining with the union then?

@pls This same publication also released this article back on 4/26, saing the "strike will be ending soon".

http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq-phillydeals/Verizon-analyst-sees-amicable-strike-deal-FiOS-expansion-mobile-media-jump.html

They were gravely incorrect in their last prediction, and one can only assume that they will be incorrect again with the article you posted.

The writing is on the wall. I think it's very obvious what is going on. Anyone who thinks that the DOL getting involved is the solution to this ending is delusional. New hires are coming in, getting trained, and will be replacing every worker who is on strike. You cannot look at this any other way.

You have a choice to listen to the silly rumors going around..."This will end by 5/20" (didn't happen). "This will end after memorial day". (Won't happen). Or you can finally come to the reality by admitting to yourself what is obvious, and coming to the only intelligent and obvious conclusion that the striking workers are not coming back and will be relpaced, regardless of how long they are on strike for, It's your choice to believe what you want.

Same feelings as yours here. Unfortunately, no one will know until that last minute. Just has to go with flow. Hard on both sides for sure, especially when we don't see the end line.
