Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Union and non-union differences are a reflection of overall generational differences

Union brothers and sisters fight in solidarity as a group for the things they hold as most important...things like job security, retirement benefits, guaranteed wages in a range they feel are fair, and American jobs. Non-Union employees see a job as a temporary tool for wealth gain and utilize tuition reimbursement to further education and gain certifications that they can take with them to the next step, knowing full well that in the 21st century there is no company loyalty and no employee loyalty. Union looks for a career while non-union is aware that the average college graduate in the 21st century will have 12-15 jobs in their lifetime statistically. I wouldn't be arrogant enough to say either mindset is the right one...they are just different.

Remember the character of Paulie in the Rocky movies? Remember his job at the Philly meat packing plant and what a non-worker he was but with every expectation that he was entitled to his job because of how long he had been there? Yeah, that's the stereotype of the older union worker. "I worked hard when I was younger so I deserve to be coddled and guaranteed a job til I retire". I can see how that would be appealing but it doesn't make a company competitive.

I've worked with a so-called union guy who has been with the company for 34 years and doesn't know his job. He is a waste of the company's resources and should be fired.

It is not likely that as the generational turnover in employment occurs that the mentality of career and security will return. It would take a paradigm shift which would represent a complete reversal of the current college graduate mentality.

My goal is to be the last one to go clinging to the mast of this sinking ship. Lowell has scuttled the boat to enrich himself without regard to managment and others. He is following the same map as our government, keep the peasants fighting among themselves while providing them minimal subsistence so they ignore those above that are destroying their lives. Democrats vs Republican, Union vs Managment, Rich vs Poor, Black vs White. Keep up the bickering, you're digging your own grave.

That kind of thinking helps the rich execs and hurts the working people.

good post OP. problem i see is that if you don't have long term longevity with a company, it is much harder to get into those higher salary ranges over time. while true that some people i've seen jump ship do so to get a better paying one, more often than not i see them having to get another job after being cast away. i've also seen people with great skills being cast away ( they now make too much or don't agree with strategic direction). i've tried to embrace the new paradyme of multi-jobs over a lifetime but when you start a family, want to send your kids to college, want to help support your aged parents, it isn't comforting to know the next day could be the last at your job. there is so much evidence out there that proves that people who are not secure will not spend money and our economy will continue to spiral out in a race to the bottom.

It's not just generational for an employer and employee relationship, Customers and consumers are no longer brand loyal either. They only are loyal to the best deal, bang for their buck. Vz's tout about the best and most reliable network mean jack squat to younger consumers and business owners. And in the wireless space, the same holds true, the other issue with wireless is the market is now saturated. Everyone who has a cell phone/smartphone has had one for a while. It's no longer about new adds, and more about controlling loss and churn and marketshare.

This is especially interesting, since the better deal will yield more customers leaving competition for v, however Big V for some reason isn't listening to its customer base, unlimited calls and text are great but a standard option across most carriers, the real need is unlimited data.

Wireless is also yearning to get the biggest spectrum result during the yearly spectrum auction. The sell off of assets and markets to frontier was a direct result of the last spectrumpet bid.

one believes in advancement (raises, promotions) based on merit and the learning of new skills - the other believes they are entitled to it simply by the number of years at the same job
