Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

EWA's - help is on the way. Union members will cross this week. Lowell isn't negotiating, he is playing the waiting game.

Be patient as members start to cross. The union will turn on its own. Lowell knows this and has no intention of agreeing to terms. Tick tick, time is on VZs side. They ere letting management take vacations and easing their schedule. Digging in deep. The "Street" is the only thing that matters and there is no union support within the market.

"The EWA work force will not be replaced anytime soon, no matter what the company lies to them."

There is little I know about this whole mess that I am completely sure of, but I know with 100% certainty the above statement is not true.

@byk Also throw in an EWA work force that is at it's end. 6 weeks and no end in site. The EWA work force will not be replaced anytime soon, no matter what the company lies to them.

Don't use the word War. It's just one company trying to assert their right to run a business vs the Union's right to strike. It's not a war.

@hzl....The Union had said absolutely no to mediation in earlier in negotiations, Which in my opinion was fine with VZ. The Union said no because, of the outcome of the last mediated contract. Verizon now looks like the good guy and wanted Government help knowing the Unions would say no.

Verizon's Lowell McAdam had a plan starting shortly after that contract to rid VZ of any Unions, Bad Idea to start with, but this guy is full of bad ideas as we all know. Lowell is a wireless guy, and always hated looking over, and at the time, up to Big Daddy Wireline, and it's Wireline CEO Ivan Seidenberg. First he would weaken the Unions through attrition gradually reducing the strength. Never hiring into the Union positions. and when weaken, and reduced attack to eliminate.

In this War he planned an Army of EWA's all trained at a boot camp facility in Virginia spending hundreds of Millions of dollars. His EWA staff would made up of a expendable staff that he will eliminate after the battle. He would never send in front line employees to this fight. fearing they would leave. He would send in frighten employees that are willing to do anything to keep their dwindling positions. (good Move)

What General Lowell had miscalculated was the actual job. The training the expendable EWA staff had received was not nearly enough to do the job. The General had not only miscalculated the the work, but also resolve of the Union Members, and the public and political support for the "middle Class Jobs" in America.

This would prove to be a disaster for Big VZ. All the Union had to do at this point was, Stay out and let Verizon implode. Every move Verizon has done has failed. They tried a media blitz to make the Union look greedy, and when it was proved the Billions in profit Big VZ was raking in, it back fired. Now throw in executive salaries, and the Big One, Verizon sending American Jobs Over Sea's ? What...Wait a minute. How greedy can Verizon be, was the public, and political outcry.

The Union at this point in the War is getting stronger, The members are day's away from getting on the Government dole, add that to their relief fund, and they will be pulling in what their base was in cash. Big VZ on the other hand has hundreds of thousands of back installations not covered. meaning no new customers only customers leaving do to poor service. Not they way to move. Verizon is literally hemorrhaging customers. The Government is not happy about the dole cash they will be spilling out and a public nightmare of a scenario. Include Wall Street watching the Stock down 3% since the start of this campaign led by General Lowell, and you have a disaster.

Slice it any way you want, Verizon by it's own doing, got it's Butt kicked in this one. I guess you can look to the General if you want to place blame.

"What QWO is failing to realize is that Big Brother Government has stuck it's nose into it"

As a logical exercise......

Don't you think if VZ was afraid of "big bro", that they would have said NO to the FMCS getting involved prior to 4/13? Of course, the union said NO at that time, and has now said YES. So, the company, if they didn't especially want the govt involved initially, they certainly weren't afraid of it (as otherwise they never would have agreed to it prior to the strike). This whole possibility of govt involvement didn't just cross their minds as a possibility now........

IMO, the govt getting involved fits perfectly with the company's plans. It is a perfect "out" and time chewer upper.

Now that said, as a bit of pure conjecture, what the govt could do (that might be underhanded, but hey all is fair is business!) is to dangle large govt contracts (such as Networx) in VZ's face. In short, a prerequisite for being on the bid list (the bids are this fall I believe) may be satisfactory resolution of the strike by a certain date. If this is happening, it may be the union's best shot at getting back to work sooner rather than later (or never).

What QWO is failing to realize is that Big Brother Government has stuck it's nose into it. This will dictate the outcome especially if it has any (even the slightest) cost to Big Bro. State Governors have already expressed displeasure with VZ and there little greedy plans.

Yes VZ is Greedy, and in there World of finance there plan is brilliant, but they will have tough going in a World of Government that is on the side of saving jobs for the Voter----"The Middle Class"

Good luck VZ I don't see it happening for you.

Who the heck wants to stay? Sell my home and move my family 1000 miles away to work a blue collar job. I don't think so. EWAs on vacation? Where. Who. Not happening at 'my shop'. Granted I am much more comfortable doing this manual labor but I can't wait for this crap to end with either an agreement or permanent replacements. No doubt the money is nice but I am not looking forward to paying taxes on all this at the end of the year.

Yes, on the EWA end, I am not terribly concerned as its obvious the worst of it on our end is over. Its slowly going back to semi-normal, and I expect those who want to stay fulltime on EWAs (and have proven proficient in those roles) will be allowed to stay, while others will generally be on partial EWAs in the next few weeks to a month. Those stationed away from home should be the first to transition back to BAU if what we are hearing is accurate.

But, I do fear for our craft workmates, as the worst of it is coming on their end :-( (Well, besides those who are already self-proclaimed multimillionaires enjoying their Florida vacation homes, etc etc.) As you stated, Lowell is simply playing a waiting game, and has exceedingly deep pockets. The market seems to support his approach, and the $ is already spent on the temporary work plan, so there really is no motivation to deviate.

I wish no harm on any of us, simply a decent resolution.
