While I definitely understand that everyone would like to always work very close to home, that is not reality anymore (especially on wireline as things are shrinking). In my BAU job, I travel at least as much as those quoted in the above article, but that is the job requirement. That's the reality and I am fine with it. Overall the pros outweigh the cons. If one finds that in their personal situation the cons outweigh the pros, then it is time to move on.
I definitely side with "middle class America" so to speak, but I don't feel that we all should be given guaranteed employment under the exact terms we want no matter the cost to the company. That was possible in the regulated era (as tax payers/subscribers were effectively picking up the tab), but it is no longer an accurate industry view.
When you don't like the requirements of your employment...you seek other employment.
