Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Impasse

Once impasse is reached if no deal in DC; and all the top brass can say they fought the good fight for the people but it just didn't work out this time...what are the next steps? I'm hearing EWA call center folks will be back to BAU jobs by end of June. Not sure about field techs. Sounds like it might take longer for temporary workers to ramp up there. Obviously there is collateral damage with lost customer revenue, which may be what they want. Can the market absorb 40K people looking for work in the same region? I bet most would have to change trades or just retire with the war chests they built up for this event.

No need to panic. Between unemployment in NY here and the CWA relief fund members will get about 825.00 a week. No need to rush out for jobs and no one will hire a worker that is on strike anyway. Those that need a little extra can find odd jobs for cash.

Lowell knows his experiment is doomed. With tight competition is wireless with no new customers, churn is the only revenue and Verizon isn't looking good in the public eye right now. Verizon's reputation will suffer greatly with a long strike. The only leverage the company has is in the first 6 weeks where there is no pay and little relief from CWA for the striking workers and that is running out.

Contractors have turned out to be a disaster for Verizon in the face of the public. The Philippine "sweat shop" like contracting, although perfectly legal, is now a nightmare that needs to go away quickly in an election year.

Of course the longer this goes the more valuable revenue will be lost and it will be hard for CWA to get or keep anything. With competition so fierce in wireless, the revenue lost in a long strike might not be easily regained. Wireless companies (including VZ wireless) are moving to compete with wire-line services such as Fios.

I'm not saying wire-line is dead like some but it will have to compete with wireless with only half of what the others do so they better do it better, cheaper and faster.

This strike ends before June 1st.

That's my two cents

"If there is a garage in a right to work state that has 15 members the company could replace 10 of them with contractors and keep 5 Union employees. "

There's only one RTW state out of all that are on strike...the rest of the states maintain "closed shops" where it's much harder to push the union out.

Unionized workforce will be back at some point in the game. What the conditions will be remains to be seen, though.

@bgg -- I would say that in light of the number of contractors being hired, trained and deployed Verizon fully intends to replace striking Union members permanently. Or at least a portion of them. If there is a garage in a right to work state that has 15 members the company could replace 10 of them with contractors and keep 5 Union employees.

That is a scenario the Union really, really needs to consider. Just saying.

"This is an economic strike. Union workers can be legally replaced."

You can repeat this mantra all you want but it won't become the truth.

"it will be the beginning of the middle class revolution and the legacy of Lowell macadam started it"

While I would personally love to see this happen, it won't...

Look outside the box ...during a presidential election year...there are probably at least 3 strikes pending with different companies ....it will be the beginning of the middle class revolution and the legacy of Lowell macadam started it

Just follow the plan and get rid of the union morons. Keep the ones who have brains enough to make their own choices. All the sheep can go find another job. Whatever it takes.

A unionized employees right to reinstatement after a strike ends varies based on the type of strike and the underlying reason for the strike. Employers are allowed to hire replacement workers during unfair labor practice strikes and economic strikes.

Economic strikers who are striking as a result of the employers failure to reach an agreement over wages or other working conditions may be permanently replaced but cannot be terminated. Strikers who are striking as a result of an unfair labor practice cannot be permanently replaced or terminated.

I bet you haven't done any research on the subject of labor laws ever.
