On the nonmgmt end the worst part is seeing people sitting up there with 40-50 years service who won't retire because they are taking care of grown kids & grandkids The people that have less than 15 years are being let go. It's sad that I am 45 and one of the youngest people in my dept.

The boomer generation wants to talk about millenials and gen x workers like it's some kind of picnic out there. This isn't the 1970s where we can buy a house for 35K and 2 cars for under 5K. Outsourcing and contractors have killed any chance at a decent living for millions. People working into their 70s has saturated the market. Companies wield all the power. My wife and I don't even have children because it's not affordable. It's an endless cycle. Older workers have to support themselves and possibly even grown children but those grown children can't advance because of older workers not retiring. Thanks trickle down economics for ruining America.
Times have change, People are living longer, wages are down, cost of living is up. Many seniors cant retire, especially in areas where economy is booming and home prices(rents) are escalating like SF Bay. It was the people with 35-50yrs service who built the company and deserve decent buyouts, severance and pensions, so those with 5-10yrs service the hell with you non union supporters who feel you're entitled to all the benefits the seniors have fought for and won. yes , it will be much easier for millennials to find a 10hr job than for seniors to leave a company they built and look for other jobs with no safety nets.BE GONE MILLENNIALS and stop pouting!!
Cut the drama ..and stop falling for the okey doke . The powers that be want you to believe this surplus wouldn't have happened it everyone with the years and age just left quietly.I'm 39 and have been working at an att company for almost 20 years. And while I don't plan on chocking on a coffee In my cubicle in 10 years. I also don't plan on retiring any time soon. Many of you are making assumptions and have no idea about people's personal situation.
Retirement was defined by Germany 80 years ago when people didn't live much longer than 65.
most people don't plan on dropping dead at 65 and actually won't.
"some people definitely will die on the job, just like the last post, very sad they do not look forward to anything in life.. like retirement"
Not me. I'm looking forward to retirement, I'm just waiting for the VISB offer. Retiring without the VISB offer will, in my case, be leaving over a hundred thousand dollars on the table.
some people definitely will die on the job, just like the last post, very sad they do not look forward to anything in life.. like retirement
"Why someone with 40 years of service, would not retire, and give the chance to someone else?"
If the incentives are right he just might. I have almost 50 years with the company. If the VISB offer (53 weeks of pay plus $25,000) reaches me then I'll be gone. If not then I'll still be here.
Why someone with 40 years of service, would not retire, and give the chance to someone else?
tech support is vague. what business unit? please say mobility.
Just celebrated my 35th. Blame the layoffs to allof all our jobs going overseas and to Canada. Almost all our tech support is from somewhere other than the USA...
As a relatively young employee, I think we have to careful with the whole attrition unicorn thing. My director blamed the surplus on "all the people who won't retire". It was inappropriate and also caused decension on the team. The truth is people are living longer, working longer etc. and so will you.
Don't fall for the divide and conquer bullshit. This surplus isn't about failed attrition. It's about Randall's bad buys like T-Mobile and his inability to monetize and create viable streams of income.
Speaking from the non-union side, the older employees or ones with many years of service are the ones being surplussed.
Everyone needs to make a living. You seem selfish and I would care less about you buddy.
Really I am a baby boomer with 3 kids still in school and I volunteered to sever to allow young parents to stay. This is tough on everyone regardless of age.
OP is talking about Union, network Jobs, for sure!
Thats not true!! The center I worked at discriminated and didnt want to hire older people!!!
Please do not think all persons over 50 sit back, do nothing and take the money. There are those of us who work very hard, often better than the upper management team.
Cut the fat, he stupid and the lazy, age does not have anything with that, managers do, they are responsible to keeps these people employed
Wow. Are you guys serious? So you think it is a better situation to get rid of someone over 50, who has almost no chance of finding another position and who will not be able to afford even subsistence living, than it is to layoff someone 40 or younger, with a much better shot at finding another job?
Layoffs suck no matter who gets it. But this contempt for people over 50 is just revolting.
And, just so you know, I am 38. I don't want to be let go, but I know that it would be much easier for me to find a new job at equal (or better) pay than my colleague who is in his high 50's.
Layoffs sure do bring out the ugly in some folks.
It's a dying company
And the really sad thing is all of the older workers are miserable. They complain all the time but will no leave
Yes! The lack of youth in the company is killing it dead. When I was with AT 4 were laid off and 1 quit after being lied to about his job duties. But there are Baby Boomers everywhere. But the Baby Boomers will cry about ageism while the company refuses to hire anyone young and got rid of the millennials first.
