I believe this will be favorable to the Union since Obama wants a democrat in office.
If this is not a GOOD offer then it will cause anger and mistrust going forward with all the other Union contracts coming up.
Then Union members may not vote democrat. So I believe this one will be extremely well and the next IDK.
Xcc - while you are correct that Verizon management is not under any obligation, The networx contract with the gov't is coming up for bid shortly (half a million bucks +) and Verizon is the incumbent.
That bid is NOT something Verizon can afford to lose -- the revenue hit would be tremendous. And I don't think it would look good for Verizon to be perceived as not working in good faith or having labor relations resulting in 40,000 people losing their jobs.
I have a hunch this will get worked out now that the gov't is involved, and the result will be something where neither party will be thrilled (which is about what a negotiation like this should be).
The company has stood firm and will continue to, but make no mistake the EIS / Networx deal is on the back of their minds.

Verizon leadership is under no obligation to accept terms from an informal non-binding process. In fact, I would argue that wireless oriented VZ leadership is going to leave a not so thoughtful 'parting shot' for the union as they prepare to exit the business themselves. Lowell, Reed, Shammo...don't expect to see them after the strike is settled, sure they have replacements waiting in the wings ready to take the helm. And, if you thought that these guys were less than pro-union, wait till you see the replacements.
QAR is one of the things you need to do to keep union workers actually working. Not needed for people who's raises and bonuses are determined by how much they get done.

The mediator is 100% pro union. She Was on the council of AFL-CIO and both the AFL-CIO AND THE Machinist union applauded her nomination the the NLRB. Union will win big this time, company execs get outsourced to Abu Dabi, yay!

Wishful thinking is not rational thinking. The mediators will attempt to satisfy both parties. Union for dem votes, Verizon as a huge federal contractor and campaign contributor. Nobody will be completely happy with the results and all sides (feds, union and VA) will claim it as a sweeping victory.
