Does anyone know once they notify you that you can get severance can you leave right away? How are people suppose to try and have a back up plan if we don't even know when our last day will be?

I actually love my manager. She is one of the best people you would ever work for.
Surplus means you don't have to work for the 60 days. You should use that time to look for s job. If your supervisor threatens you tell him you will sue him. The company will not back him in court.
The expectation is that you are allowed the time to look for work. I transitioned all my work day 14. By day 15, I realized I wasn't getting any internal bites (by design) and I aggressively stRted looking. Looking, interviewing was my Fulltime job day 15-45. Day 45 I had offers. 45-60, was sitting back waiting for my time to be up.
I already know I'm surplus, i just want to know what the hell to do the last 60 days as a minimum, still do my "job" and collect the check for 60 days.
Not sure if I have to be in office or if I can stay remote and look for work. Would love to hear insight from someone who has been through the 60 days and see what is expected during that time.
Sit back, apply for jobs outside the company while collecting a pay check from at&t for 60 days. That's what I did. It will all work out in the end. Trust me there are better companies to work for. AT&T's loss. They can never recoup the knowledge and expertise they have lost.

Even if you take the leaving ASAP option, your supervisor can still try to get you fired of they're sadistic. HR will help you out with that, though.
You can stay 60 days and as was mentioned you have to accept similar positions if offered within the area or apply if suggested you apply but reality is with the numbers that will be let go most people won't have a chance at new jobs. You can also take an early exit which is like 3 weeks after notification.
HR said you could leave within the 60 days. The 60 day notice is for legal reasons. You are entitled to be there 60 days you are not forced.
Why not sit there and collect the check?
... if you are offered a comparable position within 50 miles you have to take it though or you will lose your severence
You have to stay through the 60 days and you have to apply for jobs within at&t... no worries 99.9% of applicants in surplus situation don't even get interviews.
