Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Why would Verizon agree to meet?

Why meet? They have everything under control, work is getting done, customers are happy, EWAs are doing a better job than the experienced techs, scab workers from down south are great, blah, blah blah. Lowell and his boot lickers have realized what we all knew, he is going to lose. He will never break the Union here, now he has to crawl to uncle Obama and submit to his will. It's great.

This strike will do nothing long term to "The Company". Stock price will be fine, revenue will be fine, profit will be fine. This is not the first strike VZ has ever been through.

@Itn ... I think you have hit the nail squarely on the head. At a minimal, even if no sale is planned or in the works, VZ considers the billon or more they will spend as an investment in the future. The major stockholders understand this and will not balk at the expense.

I don't think VZ minds so much the wages and basic benefits that must be bargained. I believe their issue is the Union attempting to bargain items that fall under management decisions. At present the company is being held hostage when it comes to offering lucrative ISP/EISP and employee movement.

I expect this is where the Union will have to give in if they expect to be relevant to the new global economies.

Vz has told mgmt EWA that they will be break even if the strike goes six weeks. Saving all that health insurance goes along way when paying OT, hotel, car rentals and per diems.

"All this cost Money!!!! Bad decisions cost Money!!! Verizon right or wrong the result are the stockholder loses. They lose customers for a possible future sale and business revenue. Does not make sense"

This seems to be a decision based on the expected long term benefit. Some short term pain is to be experienced and I believe even expected by the company. If they can spend a billion to save multiples of that, from a purely business perspective it makes sense. Even if some customers end up getting lost, it will be rounding error in the overall revenue stream (and that is taking the glass half full approach that assumes the company is not going to sell this part of the business soon after a satisfactory agreement is reached). Of course, its entirely possible that this whole endeavor is being driven/influenced by back office discussions with a new buyer (might the new buyer be the one holding firm on the LBFO?). The company may already have come to general terms on the sale and the expected $$ coming in, so the billion or so "invested" to facilitate the sale is nothing much different than the commission a real estate agent gets when they sell a house. Its a transactional cost. If it costs them a billion to get 20 billion (or whatever) in the sale...still a wise business transaction.

"The reason they are bringing contractors in is to get the EWA workforce back home and in their real jobs. That stops all the overtime, food, motivations awards, etc. Once contractors are trained, you Union people should really be worried. VZ then has a cheaper workforce that can turn into permanent replacements. Be smart. Tell your Union to agree, especially the non field tech force. If not, unless you are truly a specialist, you are going to be replaced."

This definitely seems to be the approach. I am guessing that if this doesn't wrap up soon, only the top producers/smartest guys/gals from the current workforce will be back. The company will need a few of those folks for sure, but the bulk of the work can be handled by newbies with roving assistance from the experienced guys for the tougher jobs.

Unless these is a binding mediation/arbitration then I would guess it is a saving face move for the Union. VZ has the high ground on this one legally it looks like. Darn nice package offered on the stuff they are required to bargain on. If the Union gives in on employee movement then the get to save face by saving the Feds were involved.

@Hsat7Py-hga Watch out, you'll be accused of watching Fox News. 94.5 million work-age AMerians out of the work force, but unemployment is 5%. And in spite of it all Treasury take in record amounts of revenue quarter after quarter. The tools that they are don't understand who is paying the taxes, it ain't the rich, and it certainly aint the poor.

PR stunt, and the Obamanation, a planned event designed to attract the public's attention to the unrealistic union demands, how well we fared? Median household income was $53,657 in 2015, not statistically different from the 2014 median in real terms, 6.5 percent lower than the 2007 (the year before the most recent recession) median ($57,357), and
