Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

What will Tomorrow's Outcome Be?

My guess is the company will not cave in to any changes. No movement will be made.

Anyone else?

@Hqsrn9K-1rtt Your wrong. Don't have to wait till the end of the week. Verizon had close to three years to prepare for this. They even screwed that up.

@Hqsrn9K-1eyz that logic only works if the company is doing illegal accounting. They aren't. The low effective tax you keep hearing about, if it was illegal, they would already be audited

You get to write off losses, and the 2008 timeframe racked up a lot of them.

VZ won't budge an inch. They have sunk money into training, ot, and contractors. It will have been a waste if they don't get concessions they want from the union. At this point they'd be fine replacing all the union workers who refuse to return to work. They have already given concessions they had to legally work with the union on, hence the union refusal to do mediation.

Come and see end of the week if I'm right.

Company has to move and do something positive towards the Union. Remember Govt can bring regulators in and start regulating the company as a utility company. The Govt can also call for a complete Audit to be done on the company and see where exactly the money is going. Govt can do alot if Company does not comply.

During EWA my work ethic is the same as during my normal job except I have a defined start and end time. While I'm there I just work. I get one job done and grab the next one...and so on. I don't have a quota and I am not being throttled back. The acting supervisor is giving each of us jobs that we can handle based on our skill set. We have consistently closed more tickets than the BAU, although I'm sure they are jobs that are cherry picked by our supervisor. Regardless, I take the jobs that I'm given in the order they come in and do them, and get more done than the group we replaced. Why stare at the clock when I can stay busy and make the time pass faster?

To clarify, the management that is making the decision to not use their workforce for their abilities is to ensure they are following the union rules. Those of us not in the union don't have to follow that code. My pay, promotions, bonus, etc. is based on what I have contributed. I started as a low level analyst and worked my way up with multiple increases in pay due to my work. In the union, if that person that rocks is in the top 5% and has less seniority than someone in the bottom 5%, they will always make less than the inferior worker. What does that do to the motivation of the good workers? It kills it, and over the years they turn into someone that just does the minimum.

I respect those of you in the union jobs, but I don't respect your practice of following the union blindly. You don't need them, but that will require you to work and stand on your own feet.

I'm a union guy and i agree 5% - 10% are useless but also 5% - 10% are above average. Management doesn't push the 5% ers to do anything and just hand pick them easy work to keep them out of trouble and keep thier numbers looking good. The trickle down from top management has lead to workers "just making their numbers". Management has told workers "only do 2 jobs today because if you do to much it'll raise my bogey and I won't get a bonus next year". All you EWA'ers that are field foreman know exactly what I'm talking about, you other guys that think your superman need to get with the program, your making other guys look bad.

10000 replacements, then 2 to a van (one lawyer and one accountant). 20% who actually recall anything they learned in training 6 months ago. 12 hours a day completing 1-3 jobs per crew. Verizon paying out the assin OT and contractors costs, job completion rates well below 50%. Fines from states for failure to complete on schedule rolling in, VZ bleeding $. CEO receives call from largest customer and actually has to leave the golf course on a Sunday to head off a collapse of the company. Press release = We are proud of our replacements and are doing our best, we will not negotiate because we submitted our last best offer. After Perez reads him riot act, VZ returns to bargaining table will tail between legs.

You will be licking your bowl of ramen noodles, for that is what one can afford without a paycheck. And don't count on making my life miserable. I am not in the Northeast. Y'all have fun ranting and cussing. At least this is a chat versus cussing on the picket lines in front of your kids. Such a shame.

If my work product is such that I am not creating value, than I should be replaced. The purpose of having a business is to make a profit. With that profit, you can hire more people, and if they cut the mustard they can stay. Union workers tend to believe that once you get in the door, you are due a job for life, and the ones that are there the longest are paid more simply due to being there longer. I just don’t understand that mentality. Where is the drive to succeed? No wonder these jobs can be replaced with a few weeks of training. Is the workforce as proficient as someone that has been doing it for a while? Of course not, but that does not refute the fact the work is being done. A colleague of mine is at a garage that tied the RECORD for the number of tickets worked in a day last week. This is a group on the job less than a month. What does that say about the normal work ethic?

BAU jobs are not being replaced unless the person should be replaced. Many of us left behind are also working 12 hours / 6 day shifts if the work requires. And guess what, we are also getting paid! 7Ts and lower get the same pay scale as if in an EWA, and 7V an 6 are getting paid for all hours worked. We have the knowledge to prioritize workload, put non critical items / projects off until the strike is over, and ensure critical items are working and functioning.

The Union should have seen this on the wall. The company is 80% non union now. Purchasing MCI/WorldCom and the rest of VZW makes the Union’s voice very small. The company is not only in the Northeast, as the union members’ comments I have read continue to forget. We are a global company with offices all over the World. Accept the contract if you want to keep your jobs for another few years. Else, we will happily continue to earn nice paychecks as long as this last.

No one is due a job. You earn it.

The company is downplaying it because this is the end. If they don't withdraw their draconian demands you can expect the government to start investigating non-existent buildouts, SEC violations, illegal accounting practices, excessive tax breaks, and anything else they can nail the company on. If Lowell has any sense he'll realize it's cheaper to live with his union workforce and give up on this misguided quest rather than draw further wrath from the public, Wall St, and the government. The trolls can laugh all they want but this is the reality of business. He doesn't even have enough money to build out this useless 5G network and is throwing more away on his union busting shenanigans.

The Company is getting it's butt kicked in this Strike, from customer service levels, to job productivity, to the number amount of losing revenue customers, and to brand recognition at an all time low.

Wall Street hasn't got the brutal numbers of the beating Verizon is taking, but when they do, and Lowell and the boys know they can not hide it forever. That's when the proverbial Sh-t will hit the fan for Verizon.

Wall Street is there Daddy, The Numbers Will Come In, and those numbers won't be good. It's now just a matter of does the Union have this information....and if the do...they'll write their own contract and Lowell will sign.

You've heard it here. Wall Street!

"More EWA are deployed today and tomorrow."

And a few thousand more on the way, being staggered out over the next few weeks to limit the flow through training. All the classes are jammed full.

Totally agree. Company knows exactly what it's doing unlike the Union. Mudge said on call this morning that meeting with the secretary of labor meant nothing. He told EWA worker's by July maybe seeing some relief as far as days off and maybe being able to schedule vacations. VZ in it for the long haul unless Union accepts their offer.

Verizon downplayed this meeting on its update to EWA. With the full speed and continuing preparations, hard to imagine the VZ will budge. More EWA are deployed today and tomorrow. Not likely any result will come out tomorrow. Strike will continue for some time.

Any movement will be on union side. Company made a good offer at the end of April. It's either that or mediation. Union needs to choose.

Remove pension cap -- not going to happen

Active members pay more for healthcare and retirees go up slightly -- This might happen

Call sharing stays same they have now -- This is the crux of the whole issue, if VZ moves on this, you may be back to work soon.

Verizon has been stepping carefully. They are not legally bound to negotiate on all the terms the union is demanding. So Verizon doesn't have to budge even slightly on those terms. Job security being the major focus - they can't force VZ on the issue.

It's last best offer, mediation, one of the two sides budges, or impasse.

If the meetings are going to be at the Dept of Labor with the Secretary participating/mediating, there is some small chance for progress -- i.e., he can threaten to go to the press and call out one side or the other if they are being stubborn, which neither side wants.

Otherwise, this was just a PR exercise by President Obama to try to get the unions off his back by appearing to do something, while not taking sides.
