Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Yesterday's Meeting

Rumor has it the meeting call by the Labor Secretary between the IBEW/CWA presidents and Lowell was a last attempt for the Union leadership to save face. Vz is willling to back off a few of the items (30 year freeze and some medical items) and the Union will have to accept flexible work force requirements. If the Union accepts, they can blame the terms of the contract on the Government. If they balk and continue no to negotiate, the fault is their own. Verizon has no interest in declaring a lockout, the Unions are doing that for them and there can then be no ULP charges that will stand. Verizon will then implement the doomsday scenario using temporary replacement workers to fill all domestic based positions. More outsourcing will continue and in the end, there will be fewer jobs for Union members to have when and if they return to work. Also, Union Leadership was told any attempt to add Wireless to the roles should be done in another effort, the focus should be getting their members working. Union enrollment should be done at a later time.

More to come.

Verizon should just suck it up for 15 more years to its current workforce. In 15 years no one will be left besides temporary employees and they are not protected by layoff clause. Then Verizon will have its non Union business.

You come straight out of a comic book. What in the world makes you think you are better off than me or any other Union member? If your status in life is so much better, you wouldn't be on this blog bit(c)in about having to do EWA work. The fact that you did have to go should give a clue on your real worth to Verizon. I came to Verizon with experience. I have been in management in the private sector. The one thing I don't want to be is management in Verizon. Unless you are a director you are as expendable as any other employee. That's the part you don't get. Get over yourself and understand where your a$$ is!

Verizon's numbers are real, love or hate Fran, he runs a tight ship. If you watch the business and the numbers, you can see that the company is giving a clear and accurate picture of the economics. Frankly, they are being gracious in trying to negotiate as soft a landing as possible for a declining business. Wireline to the home and most small businesses is going away. Even, eventually, Fios once the network ages.

The world is your oyster...you have a pension, 401k, separation benefits for when you DO leave, educational benefits to prepare yourself for the future, low payments for outstanding medical insurance...and time to plan. Most wage slaves and entrepreneurs have nowhere close to that kind of launch pad.

I don't speak for VZ in any shape or form, just trying to put it as I would tell a friend. After working in the field for a month and all the wacky things I've seen, I'm sure some of us could laugh and be friends if we knew each other.

Best of luck to all, and Peace.

@lbo. No one replaced me, and the work is piling up. See the difference between us is that my job takes skill and expertise and cannot just be filled arbitrarily. Specialty jobs require extensive training and understanding, so jobs like mine just can't be farmed out. I hear from my Director every few days telling me how much work I will have when I come back, and that's fine. Will be nice to use my brain again.

Yours on the other hand can be covered by just about anyone. It's pretty simple really, and doesn't require a great deal of thought to do your job. So, moral of the story is that you have maxed out on potential in your job whereas I'm just beginning.

@lbo moments notice? We were first trained months ago to cover for you. It was the plan. And, for those of us who are out on EWA, we have people backing up our BAU jobs. And I too took advantage of the tuition assistance. Good for you. Clap, clap, clap.

The difference between us is that I not only have education and experience, I also have something you know nothing about. That's called integrity. That alone will keep me far ahead of you in life. I know when I was an HR Recruiter years ago, the first resumes we disqualified and threw away were the ones that had any type of union references on them. We all knew hiring anyone with a union background was a waste of time. They are always the lowest performing group, so we just chose to skip firing them at the end, and just chose not to hire them. Saved us a lot of headaches that way. So......good luck using your marketable skills doing anything other than climbing poles or crawling through basements for the rest of your life. You've reached the pinnacle of your career already. It's all downhill from here for you.

"Proves how little it takes to replace you".

Spare me with the" you are replaceable argument". Let's just analyze this a little closer. If we walked and they moved you to a different job at a moments notice that you do so well then, answer this question.

Who else may be a little bit more replaceable than we are ?

You don't have to post the answer.......... we already know!

You sound like George Bush during Katrina "Brownie your doin a heck of a job". No soldier want's to accept that their effort's were a failure. The good news is the failure isn't yours. As for options, what is this notion that the only people with options are management. You see, I took advantage of the Union bargained tuition assistance and I have marketable skills coming to Verizon. So get over yourself and buy a clue with all that forced overtime money you just made.

@Listentoreason - you aren't telling the truth about how profitable wireline really is. The truth is, wireline pays all the corporate operating costs and CEO and executive salaries. Also, there are allegations that VS uses wireline as their cost center where as they dump any of the loses and debt on the wireline side to make it appear it isn't as profitable as it is. Also, wireline provides the headend backbone for wireless service to function. No fiber to the head end and those magical cell towers don't work. We directly and indirectly add to VZs bottom line to make them as profitable as they are.

@xco See, this is where the union people show their arrogance and incompetence. EWA staff have done a great job of walking in and taking over the union jobs. Proves how little it takes to replace you. As for the EWA team, we have plenty of options open to us. Unlike you, we don't have to beg and worry about holding on to our jobs. You may only have one option in life, but we have many. I realize without your VZ job you would end up flipping burgers somewhere or washing cars for a living. Both are respectable jobs, and in many ways, even more respectable than yours. Those jobs at least require an honest day's job out of the employee, instead of allowing bloated, incompetent, ignorant, lazy a-holes to do as little as possible every day and then cry when they actually have to work.

You have chosen your station in life. You will always be one step behind us, and one rung lower than us. Now, go get ready for strike duty. You have to walk and chant to earn your $2 today. Maybe your union boss will tip you today after you swallow for him.

Ever heard of creative accounting? Having trouble understanding how assets already paid for and no maintenance are losing money. Now that might be true in the areas Verizon sold off but in the Northeast, I just don't see it . Even you admit wireline turns a 7% profit. So what part of that 7% comes from wireless ?

"Union leaders grasping at straws since they misjudged the effect of walking off the job."

The only ones grasping at straws are homesick EWA's with all that "I welcome the riff " nonsense. At least the Union members are organized and have some protection from Lowell's wrath. We are gonna see who are the real expendable one's in short order. So take precaution and use as much lube as necessary.

Lol...if you think wireline is funding wireless, you have no idea how this business works. Wireline is 20% of revenues, 7% of profits. Wireless is funding much of the capital needed to keep the wireline network alive.

Union leaders grasping at straws since they misjudged the effect of walking off the job. They thought they would leverage VZ but it hasn't happened. They will accept the last best final offer this week and the union members will wonder why they lost so much money while on strike instead of taking the offer a few weeks ago. VZ is a far superior negotiator than the union. I think the union's legal team are the Three Stooges.

The company is only attempting to show it cares in the public view. The conpany doesn't want to look like a bully and will say they want to talk but will still over what they want. They have already started training employess and bridges wireless employess as well. Calls are being routed and those reps are being asked to install. Bottom line is the company doesn't want the union and has already spent money in the work stoppage. The only way this will end is when the stock starts to dip. Lowell answers to the stock holders not the unions, employess or the customers. Sad but true it's finiancial gain or lost that will dictate if this is over. The company can fake it for as long as they need and leave customers without service and have them to another provider. Majority of the customer are working fine and don't need to call us. These customer are the ones who make us money.

We're not giving up ANYTHING. We did that in 2011 and with Verizon's profit margins it's their turn now. There isn't one single reason for the union to give an inch since wireline is still a huge part of the network despite the propaganda and financial book cooking.

Union saving face? So, if the company holds all the cards why give into anything ? They already have put in the LBFO and everything is in their favor. Little or work backlog or repeat troubles. Highly trained replacements being deployed. If all this is true why negotiate at all? It seems at a minimum both will save a little face.

Just an observation!

Verizon continues to put their leftover Halloween candy in the Easter Basket. How about something new, actually leading, rather than "me too" offers? Try treating your tradesmen like valued contributors to your success for once, instead of as the uninvited houseguest whose stayed too long. Sure VzW is the pretty girl who puts out but you're STILL MARRIED to your VzT spouse of 80 years and she's not going anywhere. Buy her something nice to calm her down.

"and the Union will have to accept flexible work force requirements. "

They would be voting themselves out of the office right then and there. It's simply not going to happen.

The membership is still upset over the last contract and the expectations are high. Anything that remotely resembles VZ's current proposals on job security and/or movement of work will NOT get ratified. It's really that simple.
