Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

flexible work force movement

The company already has the ability to move people.. The problem is how they actually do it.

Its almost always a last minute notice, like we need to know by the end of the day.

They never have answers.. how long will it be, etc? Its always we dont know

So the end result over and over is people say no, and they force usually from the low seniority up..

If they could make an agreement on this, they probably wouldnt have these issues.

From what I have seen time and time again is that people turn down temp transfers, even if its closer to home.. Why..Because they dont want to get "stuck" somewhere for up to 364 days. and who can blame them? They take the transfer offer, they might hate it and now they are there for a year.

What I propose it this: Any temp xfer, you have to stay for a minimum of 30 days.. If you like it, you can stay longer, if its not for you, then you go back..

Im willing to bet, you get more people to take these transfers knowing they would not be stuck in a place they hate for 364 days. Because the way it is now, people are turning down oppurtunities closer to home and thats crazy. Give someone a 30 day window and they might try it.. They might even like it and volunteer to stay longer.

Does it make any sense to constantly force the same junior people over and over? Ive seen senior people pass over a temp transfer that would cut their 1 hour commute down to 10 minutes..why? because of uncertainty and fear of change..

a 30 day back out clause ,most can live with that.

As far as the transfers out of state and long distances, you always have a percentage of people that take those transfers,They are single, kids are grown, want to get away from the wife.. You know what I mean. Establish a list of people who dont mind working far from home, Maybe state by state or the whole footprint, who knows..but make the damn list and draw from those people first.

Why send someone from pittsburgh to Philly when maybe a guy from Newark would want to go

Verizon has made working conditions unacceptable by any corporations standards when it come to the union employees. It keeps stating that it wants to be more like Google and Apple. Those corporations actually value their associates so much that it makes the working environment fun with massage tables, scooters, Foosball tables....ect. No one here is looking for that. We only want to be treated as a valued asset and not a liability. A liability to profits and that affects all American workers. Sure Verizon wants to be like Google and Apple, but in profits only. It's entire QARS report is designed to terminate a union employee and is actually at the center of a whistle blower lawsuit in NJ. The idea is to make working conditions so unbearable that you either quit, retire or get fired for a "codes" violation. "codes violations" it's own attorneys in a sworn deposition said were merely guidelines and not to be taken seriously. This from a RIF law suit in Mass. Ewa's know exactly what I am speaking of and know their own vulnerability when it come to their employment at verizon. Most of the vitriol spewed here by them comes from envy.

"Have a job title as a " travel tech" where 6 months of the year you can be moved to where the work is. Offer a diff in pay. I'm sure there will be folks lined up for this"

This guy needs to be at the bargaining sessions too! Brilliant idea IMO.

"Why send someone from pittsburgh to Philly when maybe a guy from Newark would want to go"

Because they want to make people as miserable as possible and get them to quit. That policy has been in effect for at least two years in many states that are now on strike. All of a sudden, the productivity didn't matter one bit...and the latest "movement of work" language follows the same routine.

Your train of thoughts makes a ton of sense. Unfortunately, there's very little room left - if any - for anything close to common sense in this set of circumstances.

Do not use logic in the bargaining process.

The union heads, and the VZ leadership do not like it.

"haha thanks!

Master list of techs for all long haul transfers.. Problem solved! We all know a few techs that will go anywhere ,anytime.. Heck people went to New orleans on 8 week shifts, so many volunteers they had to turn people away"

You are coming up with creative options, which is what is needed. The "one day longer",dig heels in, etc stuff is not going to work anymore.
