Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

In the news

While a strike can pose short-term challenges, both AT&T and Verizon have trained replacement workers to fill in for union roles, unions were "fashionable" and "viable" during the 1930's through 1960's but became obsolete models because they retarded competitive growth in the non-unionized emerging global market place. Today, it's Capitalism at it's finest, in which unions are non-competitive, few benefits associated with the 30 % membership, and if you can't think for yourself you must let others decide your fate.

But are there times when our fears are warranted, or perhaps trying to warn us of potential bad outcomes? Do you let fear stop you from doing anything, or do you push it aside and take the plunge anyway? The decision is all yours, to make.

Verizon doesn't need to do the hiring. Management companies are already doing it.

Cushman and Wakefield is getting ready to renew there 5 year contract and expanding into the Network side. It worked for Real Estate and it will work for the Network.

This is a fact and not fiction. Roll out November 2016

What's wrong with finishing 5 tickets and 1 triple a day? Just because you lazy union leeches couldn't do doesn't mean others can't.

True but if they are not by legal definition perminent it doesn't violate any laws...but again that's for the lawyer's to argue and get paid for arguing for however long. You are totally right about management getting replaced with contractors, as well as all call center and craft employees outside of the required quota. That's the direction they are going and will continue to go in, with or without a contract being signed. Even if some concessions are made, union membership will inevitably continue to dwindle as retirees are not replaced and subsequent contracts are further eroded.

Hahahahah you just agreed to my point. Do you have any idea how many temporary contractors vz hires today in mgmt?! They keep them for year after year. It doesn't matter if your contract is a 90 days or 3 years if vz is always willing to sign the renewal.

News flash..or reality check...all of the replacements are temporary contractors, they have no intent of hiring perminent replacements. That makes the lawyer's 'economic vs ulp' argument an irrelevant one. 1900 techs who had orientation and 1st day of work on 5/9 signed a 90 day temp contract, which was touted as the probationary period. They can sign another one at the end of the 90 days with an increase of pay based on job performance/reliability at contract expiration as deemed necessary. Company has not and will not hire perminent replacements. Note of the 210 temp contractor jobs posted on VZwebsite, and the ones on careerbuilder.com etc, there's a big destination between 'full time' (ie guaranteed at least 35 hrs per week) and 'perminent'(ie benefits etc). If VZ doesn't fulfill they have to pay out value of 90 day contract, if temp contractors don't hold up their end they are penalized back down to $25/hr and repay partial per diem. VZ has No intent of hiring on full time. That gets them almost no further ahead than they would be if they brought the union back.

Newsflash: They can because its an economic strike. Feel free to look that one up and learn for yourself. Mooney agrees that it is an economic strike as well.

News flash: They cannot hire permanent replacements. It's illegal.

Thats not a very enlightening statement in my opinion. In this case im choosing to believe it because of the following evidence and action:

  1. It came directly from the horses mouth

  2. The plan is clearly already in action. We see new hires in the garage everyday.

Do you really think they will spend all the money to equip and train these guys and then turn around and pay twice as much for the union? The same union that won't stop poking the bear. Keep thinking time is working to the unions advantage. Everyday that goes by the justification to bring you back is a little less than the previous day.

The company is replacing workers correct. They have Cushman and Wakefield, and Jones LAng LaSalle already running almost all realestate operations and Human resources. The next step is to run the Network side of things. People are already in place for it and it doesn't matter if the union comes back or not. They are going to manage union and nonunion Network employees, realestate and HR as well as all construction jobs in the near future.

The future for all Verizon employees is over...especially those without collective bargaining power. Anyone who thinks differently is kidding themselves.. And those sh--ting on the union are either blind or too scared to admit that there days are numbered.

You can dismiss the troll comments as shills all you want but you cannot change the fact that the company is well into the process of replacing you permanently. They don't need a lockout to replace your job. They will just keep the temp contractors on for the year(s) until they sell wireline. Either put the LBFO to a vote or start looking for a new job. You can chant all you want but you can't deny the companies enormous advantage in this strike if you actually looked at the facts.

In Mid-Atlantic area, average number of picketers who cross the line daily averages about 5,000.

250,000, or a quarter of a million have crossed the lines thus far.

Call Centers now staffed at 120%, time from a customer calls in for a repair or installation to dispatch=5 seconds, average repair tickets per EWA/scab closed per day=37, average triple-play installs per EWA/scab=15, penetration rate in all Fios areas=101%

Boston fiber build all but complete.

EWAs & scabs on 4 hour work days, 3 days per week.

VZW wireless 5g fully deployed and an instant smash.

Go VZ team! What a great place to work! Better matters!

5 tickets and a triple play=6 eventual repair tickets

What this really means is 6 actual visits to a customer location, no work done, but tickets closed-out, which really means, one step forward=five steps back.

Welcome to VZs fuzzy new math. More matters. At least on paper lol

In Mid-Atlantic area, average real scab (who cross the picket line) finish 2.3 tickets per day and average EWAer can do 3.2 tickets per day. My friend, an EWAer, finished 5 tickets and one triple play yesterday. If an EWAer can finish 5 tickets before 5pm, he/she can go home at 5pm instead of 7pm. At end of this month, everybody can start to have two days off a week.

Verizon employs no one who "writes code". That's all contracted to the outside, outsources, leased, etc.

What you really do in Basking Ridge is fill out a spreadsheet and surf the net all day, update your status on Facebook and shop on Amazon.

Too much middle management doing nothing. Their uselessness it clearly evident in the entire EWA deployment. Going for short jaunts to Starbucks takes precedence over fixing a customer's service, let alone installing brand new services, specifically at a business.

Going to Starbucks and surfing the net: great marketable skills right there VZ-Teamers!

No tools, that's classic. Did you see the video of the guy trying to open the hub, I don't care what tools he had. The no tool excuse could not be used since 1990. The customer was grateful because she was oos for two weeks.

Trashed & rearranged? Tools taken home? lol, oh please. Sounds like a dereliction of duty from the VZ management team in place at the time.

No one is surprised. Bad management from the top, right down to the local level lol.

Even if that were all true and totally widespread, the garages could have been cleaned up in like 1 day and tools shipped overnight to any location. How long will you keep using that excuse? lol

And what have you learned each day? We're all interested in specifics. What was the problem with that customer in DC and what/how did you fix it? Please do post.

Oh, and if you're not a H-1B yourself, there are 500 million people in India who can turn on a computer and write code. Your job is next.

You're pompousness, arrogance & cavalier attitude will doom you. Sorry.

"4 to 5 people because garages have been trashed and rearranged by out going strikers. Trucks left in total disarray. And the best part: not having parts and tools on hand because strikers took them home with them and the shop managers won't demand return of company property. Last house I was at outside of DC the customer was grateful I was able to fix their problem AND were unaware there was a strike. Each day I work I learn more as does all of the EWA. Now if I had the luxury to strike I seriously doubt you could turn my computer on. Let alone write code."

No, Somehow when a person in a rental car or the p.o.s. "Vehicle" shows up to do the job they haven't been provided with the appropriate training or tools.. You say it's the striking employees fault? Ha what you have is what they had. VZ has skimped and shorted everyone. The local managers know that the very few tools they have they are not giving to scabs..

When it takes up to 4 or 5 "trained People" to complete One Job in one day that a Union Tech could do in 2.5hrs, Your not doing anything but burning money in an attempt to turn the United States into a $1.78 per hour nation. VZ is breaking a lot of safety and local i.d. laws at the moment. It will catch up to them..
