I understand going on strike when negotiations breakdown. Why did the union wait 10 months for the company to get everyone trained and have thousands of contractors lined up and ready to step in as they are doing now?

No unemployment in PA, VA, MD, WVA. No idea about D.C.
Which states are going to pay unemployment? Because you can't collect unemployment when you elect not to work or quit -at least that is how it works in our state. The state isn't going to support you when you walk off a job. And he IBEW people do not get any pay/strike fund.

See that's where you're mistaken. June is when unemployment kicks in for many states and our income will only be slightly less with the Union Strike Fund than if we were working. As for those hicap/internet troubles being addressed, they're not. Most of the guys they have out there now barely have an understanding of tip and ring.
@HpI11Ib-lbh - Union should have waited and worked until the "last-best" offer deadline. Bad move to walk off... No one wins - Company gave "last-best" - union said no. If the company holds their position -1/2 the membership will cross in June. As long as the hicap/internet troubles are being address - company has the upper hand. - no pressure for them to budge. Cell Phones/w Hot spots are the norm. Average Joe really could care less about his LL. From what I see - the company is taking care of the major areas. With that said - new orders as suffering and the will lose those high dollar circuits to competitors - lose lose for all. We will see soon enough who bows first. I think the union will cow tow to that offer.
Somewhere, guys like Lonnie Stephenson are looking at Shelton and Mooney and thinking "at least I'm a better Union leader". Lonnie doesn't even want his guys on strike, but "solidarity".
EWA was training as early as last June. I heard rumors that the strike was going to happen when the pope came. Then at Christmas. My thoughts are no one wanted to walk the line during winter months. People are tweeting they are enjoying the beach and mini vacay so I think that must have been the union CEOs thought behind the process.
Uh, are you obtuse? The union tried negotiating for 10 months with the company saying no to every single compromise laid out on the table. The strike was in response to the forthcoming "last, best offer" that had to be accepted by May 20th. Had we not struck we would have had the terms of that contract imposed on the membership. You can try to make the union look like the bad guys here but that just isn't so.
Mooney's 2013 pay was $167,385. He's going to be higher than that now. On our backs. The song and dance that he's not taking pay while we're on strike is bullshit. Same for his healthcare. He's still got it.

Teh, 95% of us feel the same, why walk when working under old contract. I've talked to people that have switched there service off of vz because nobody could fix it, as long as there internet works they don't care who provides it. How many customers will never come back? No customers, no jobs, no union dues.
Training was completed by the end of the contract with supplemental trading continuing weekly. Contracting firms were in place and ready to hire when notified by Vz. The union miscalculated and waited for the primary election to take place in NY with support from the candidate best fitting their strategy. The expectedBernie towing and fight the fight and have constant media exposure. We all know Bernie went down in flames and little hope exists for his socialist views in a capitalist society. The union thought they would get more attention from the political race when they went on strike. Little did they know they would just be a quick rally for Bernie and that's it. Now they have put themselves into a position where they're going to lose their jobs. I hope this whole thing ends soon
